As far as I'm concerned, this is THE book to read:

Codependent No More: How to Stop Controlling Others and Start Caring for Yourself by Melody Beattie

Another good book is:

How much of me do I have to give up to be loved by you!

Just typing the title gives me pause for thought. What do I need to do for my growth today? Am I trying to be something I am not just to please someone in my life? Where and what would my H.P. have me do to become the person He created me to be?

Al-Anon's book From Survival To Recovery deals specifically with ACoA issues, and their daily reader Hope For Today does as well.

In my own experience, books only took me so far and kept me in my head a bit too much.

For my own ACoA issues, Al-Anon has been the saving grace and has taught me how to get healthy and enjoy healthy relationships. I shudder to think where I'd be today had I not become an active member of the fellowship these past years. I'd prob'ly be surrounded by quite a collection of half-read self-help books (more than I have already, heh, heh...) stacked from floor to ceiling, acting as doorstops and paperweights...

"Self-help" is what got me in trouble in the first place: I helped myself to whatever I could get from others (and chose others who'd do the same to me). The mutual help offered through 12-Step recovery is what finally worked!

Dilema of the Alcoholic Marriage has a lot of good ways to improve communication. I found that when I was working through it, I was able to change a lot of the ways I communicated with Mr Magic. It improved our relationship even before he got back into recovery. I agree with nocell on the to recommendations. I have read many books that aren't Al-Anon, but I study, learn, and try to live the 12 step recovery. Hugs, Magic

"Boundaries" has helped me a lot. It not only discusses setting boundaries, but one chapter delves back into your childhood and gives examples of ACOA and others and explains WHY we are the way we ARE. And one chapter gives descriptions of adults who are "codie" and why they are that way. Then, why we need to work on changing some of those behaviors. It is a Christian book.

Happy Reading.

I recall reading this one a while back:

Adult Children of Alcoholics, by Janet Woititz

Here's the Amazon link

As you can see on the page, she's written quite a bit on the subject.

Claudia Black's good, too.

...and there's always Bradshaw...

Hope you find what you need!
