First Al Anon Meeting

I think I’ve found my group! Funny story though... the very first one I went to I spent the first 5 minutes of the meeting accidentally in the AA group 🤦*♀️ But they got me to the right place. The very first Al Anon meeting didn’t feel right to me, all of the talk was too vague and it didn’t feel intimate or relatable. But then I went to another one last night and choose a different location and felt much more comfortable opening up and I could actually talk aloud about my story and have these other people say “yes me too! That happened to me, that’s what I’ve gone through etc” and it felt liberating to see these people face to face and know I’m not alone. And to hear their stories and realize how similar they were to what I’ve been through. It was a very relatable group and felt more like community building than anything. Nothing wrong at all with the first meeting, but now I get why they say try several before saying it’s not for you.
Anyway, that’s all. Glad to have SR and to have found a group.

That’s great, FWN.
Al-Anon can be a game changer. Glad you persisted.

A huge game changer, yes! Finding the right group is essential, as you discovered. It's sad to hear people say that "I tried AlAnon and it wasn't for me" when they went to only one or two meetings. The right group makes ALL the difference. Happy for you!

You know it's the right group when you look forward to going back.

That is great news FWN! I'm so glad you found a group that "fits".
I will always remember my first meeting and the face to face aspect
of speaking with people who really get it. An awakening of sorts.
Keep going back!

FWN,

The first time went to an al-anon meeting held at the same time and same location as a AA meeting, I did the same thing was in the AA meeting for about 5 min before they realized i was in the wrong meeting. room.

I have been going for 5 months now and have a great group of people who i feel comfortable opening up to. Which for me is big. I'm usually the person who hides in the back hoping the teacher doesn't call on me. I'm the quiet one. I never felt that way with these people. It has really helped me get through things and i look forward to going to it every week. Keep going like everyone is saying that is is a game changer to get it out and talk. I always feel great after each meeting. Have a great day and stay strong.

That's wonderful! I always love to hear when someone is willing to try out another group. One group is not a fit for some while it may be for others. So happy you are getting the support you deserve!
