Absence of peace is an excellent way to put it.
At least alone you can relax, but with a drunk, hyper vigilant was all I could muster until I could get away to my bed and be sad.

Sadly, I did this to my spouse when I was drinking in later stages.
I'm deeply ashamed and sorry because I grew up with it and should have known and done better.

YES! The absence of PEACE. The absence of CALM in my mind. In my own house on an otherwise normal evening home with my family.

Hawkeye and yes, my escape is when I can finally be alone in my bed in my room away from it all after my children are asleep.

Whenever you are in the presence of someone who is drunk, you are alone, they are in their own world and you just get to watch it.

Detaching is key.
