You're kind of fond of each other. Would it be at all practical to live close to each other but not together? Or get a granny flat for out the back? Whether for him or you would be for you to decide.
A relative of mine who was a lifelong A, ended up living in a caravan out the back of his ex wife's house. I think it suited them both as they still had fondness for each other, but only at a distance.
