If he was tired of trying to stay sober, and had started drinking again, he wouldn't want, (and wouldn't see the need) for his support system being there.

If he is to get and remain sober his focus must be 100% on recovery and nothing else. Sounds like Alanon might be a good bet for you; I learned to detach from a dysfunctional relationship with an alcoholic.
