A Dearly Loved One
I spoke with someone from this District's Al-Anon group this morning. What he had to say aboutbAl-Anon just blew me away.
I am going to my first meeting tonight. It is a Step meeting. The meeting to which I am really looking to is on Monday and is for Beginners.

That's great Soberleigh, i'm glad the call was such a positive experience for you.
The reason I suggested perhaps asking your Sister along is because she is no less affected by being part of a family that has alcoholism in abundance than you are, and maybe, just maybe something at one of those meetings will resonate with her.
Seeing as it's not an AA meeting, and it (somewhat) takes the focus off her "problem" it might appeal to her and potentially help.
Anyway that was the idea.
I hope you find it really helpful and uplifting.

Hey Soberleigh!
I have three A siblings, Older bro doesn't drink anymore but smokes pot 24/7, we're not close at all; middle bro has struggled to get back a decent job and driver's license and claims he doesn't drink but I get nasty messages and have odd phone calls from him where I know he's drunk. Baby bro is active in his alcoholism, in fact, I don't even know where he is living right now, his gf, understandably, kicked him out (again) and he does not reply to cell calls or emails...he is a heartbreaker for me, because his bottom seems so far away still and we were so very close growing up, I have a tender spot for him.
So I can't give you much sunshine on the change in the alcoholic but I can tell you that yes for sure AlAnon is what turned my head around and finally gave me some tools to calm my anxiety related to my A bros. My father was also an A but he recovered and really changed in his late forties, which I always thought would be the example for my bros, just like you are a living example for your sis. But every person and certainly every addict is different.
Good luck with your AlAnon meetings - I also live in a pace with many meetings and I shopped around until I found the groups that I felt a good click with. And kudos on your won recovery, seriously, that is just a beautiful thing you have done for yourself and the world around you!!
Peace,
B

Thanks so much, Bernadette, for that beautiful share. I am so glad that your father found recovery.
I will pray for you all of your brothers and, especially, that you find your baby bro - it must be so worrisome for you; I just can't imagine. I honestly don't know what is worse - being an active alcoholic/addict or loving one.
The Al-Anon meeting was really good and the people so incredibly welcoming. I am really looking forward to the Beginners meeting on Monday.
Thanks, again, for your wonderful response, Bernadette.

First congratulations on 6.5 years. That is impressive and a great accomplishment. I have no experience with alcohol in our family as I am the only one that has the problem. I can only offer prayers for your strength and hope that one day your sister will see the same light that turned your life around. God bless.
