Friend of Bill's?

This is a question I have been pondering...in your experience, do you find that most people who have been in the rooms of AA understand the 'code' of this question?

Random flotsam that floated to the surface of my brain this morning, lol!

Yes, absolutely.

And it is often a way someone identifies to others or in a "mixed crowd" that another alcoholic immediately recognizes.

it doesnt seem to take a person very long, if they keep coming to meetings, to learn and understand what it means.

FOB.

at work we have a "Friend of Bill W's" meeting. often on cruise ships you might see the same thing. even airports. it allows folks to identify without breaking anonymity..........

Many years ago during my drinking
career, we pulled up behind a truck
at a light when i spotted a rear window
sticker saying.....Friend of Bill W's....
causing me to wonder who the heck
was Bill W..

Little did I know at that time it would
become a saying very important in my
own life.

After entering recovery on August 11th
1990, learning the AA program of recovery
and incorporating those important steps
and principles in all my affairs on a continuous
bases, I can honestly say that I am a
FOBW's when someone asks me or
I of them.

I would agree that it's pretty widely understood.

Great post, same year for me, 10/08/1990. Amazing how time flies, huh? I was in a buffet line at church and a new member of the church, about my age, came up to me and said, "I hear you know Bill W." We hit it off right away! You know, it is kind of like veterans of the military, especially Viet Nam era vets. We become a family of untold numbers, and instantly a bond begins. Like here, I suppose. Congrats on the upcoming 28th Anniversary of Sobriety!

Congrats right back at ya Golfreggie and
thank you as we continue on our journey
each day with a new gift of friendship in
an awesome fellowship of AA.

I have a golf thread where i add the
new leaderboard for each weeks PGA
championship. Feel free to join in if
you have time to share who your favorite
player is or whom you are rootin for like
this weekends Arnold Palmers Invitational
held in Florida.

There's many good players out there
doing their best to reach Stenson and
Byson who are tied for 1st with -12.

In my head, "Friend of Bill W" is one thing, and FOB was a friend of Bill Clinton.

Friend of Bill here...

Funny thing is, I’ve only been asked that once, and it was pre-recovery. I was on a camping trip with some friends. It was supposed to be a backpacking trip, and the gals I was with don’t drink, I knew bringing alcohol would have really stood out. So I was grudgingly sober that week.

Another small group of women came to the otherwise empty campground, and one of them started talking to me. After a few remarks and slightly meaningful looks, she asked if we were “friends of bill.” I was utterly confused, but they had set off my “gaydar,” so I kind of nodded (cause we were lesbians too- it must have been international lesbian friends campout week and I hadn’t seen the memo... ) thinking maybe that was a Kentucky codeword or something. About mid-nod realized it probably meany something else... so I stopped nodding and admitted, “I’m sorry I’m not sure what that means?”

Of course she said “nothing,” and walked away. I was utterly confused, again. Then it dawned on me several minutes later that I’d heard that before, and what it meant. I almost ran to their campsite and said “no, but I should be!” But alas, it took me about four more years to sober up for good.

I have a lesbian friend who collects old-school "codes" for "I'm gay, are you gay too?". My personal favorite is "so, do you sing in the choir too?".

I wonder if we could use similar code for the F&F side...maybe, "Are you a friend of Lois W's?"
