I last posted here on 12-19-2015, when I learned my best friend had died of her alcoholism.
https://www.soberrecovery.com/forums...ml#post5697399 (Lost friend)
I posted the thread because I want to call attention to what I said in the second sentence.
Within a month after I wrote that, my daughter was in the hospital vomiting blood from an evening with tequila and xanax and when asked if she was feeling suicidal said "yes". She was subsequently dx'd as bipolar--which I always suspected her alcoholic dad might be--and is on meds and sober since January 2016.
Until last week. She called today to tell me she relapsed but is trying to get back on track.
So, here I am again...

Welcome back Mighty but so sorry for your reason to be here.
You all with alcoholic children are a different level of courage and suffering.
Prayers for your daughter, family and all involved with her care.

Mighty....re lapses do hit us hard....and, as a mother, you have every ounce of my compassion and understanding....
I am glad that she admitted it to you.
I think the m ost important thing is to get back on the horse, after falling off!
It sounds like she is doing that....
Lets hope that she follows her program and is compliant with her doctors instructions....
(just be careful not not enable).....

Thank you all who responded. This is a good support place.
I threw her father out when she was 8, and I raised her with the awareness of alcohol and how it could be something she was predisposed to. She did not drink until she was in college because she feared becoming an alcoholic.
And then she found out that she was.
I have realized that dealing with my alcoholic exh and then with my alcoholic best friend prepared me for being a mother to an alcoholic. I can't fix this. I have to maintain a balance between being a mother and detaching.
One thing that's making this part of the journey a bit different also is that for the first time in many years, I am in a relationship again, and the person with whom I've fallen in love lost his wife to alcoholism.
It's a little different, two caretakers getting together. I haven't experienced this before. We'll see how it goes.
