The guy who shot his wife, himself, and two kids in the San Bernardino classroom, like so many mass shooters, had a history of DV. Like so many, he should never have had a gun because he had protective orders against him--and he'd committed acts of domestic violence against at least two former partners, in addition to the victim of the shooting: The San Bernardino gunman had a history of domestic abuse, like most U.S. mass shooters.

I know I sound like a broken record going on and on about how dangerous abusers can be.

Tragedies like this one are not outliers; they are not unusual or surprising. They are predictable in one sense--motive, opportunity, the existence of certain lethality factors provide some indications of dangerousness. But it's impossible even for the experts to say with any degree of certainty which ones will turn lethal.

Please, PLEASE take ALL abuse seriously. And if you want a cause to promote in your community, consider working for legislation to make it easier to disarm domestic abusers. Many states and communities lack laws or effective protocols to accomplish this, even though the federal laws prohibit possession by those convicted of misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence or by those subject to a qualifying protective order.
