Interesting thread here.
My qualifier was a kind and caring person in many ways. He was and is an engineer; he's fascinated by the physical world but not so much by the non-physical world. He never seemed particularly interested in me but then I don't think he was interested in the complex non-physical parts of people that much.

No question that active using can amplify personality defects. Never hear the saying, "instant as*hole, just add alcohol?" For me, when I quit, it brought all of the really great parts of me...patience, acceptance, empathy, and a humor that I can now display without saying something off putting.
