OT: please pray for my mom
If I can impose on the forum...
My 84 yo mom is in the hospital with divirticulitis, she is on a liquid diet. She had a bad reaction for the one day they tried to give her solids. She's had bowel problems for a while, not sure how long but she's lost a lot of weight and is very weak. They are giving her meds which seem to help a little but she remains weak and if she does not show improvement very fast (like tomorrow) they'll most likely do surgery very quickly.
I'm 3,000 miles away. I'm so scared. If she improves I'll go when she gets home and I can help her. It's an awful time for me to be away from work but if they say surgery I'll go immediately. We (my brothers and I) keep getting different reports from the doctors. One dr gave a very bad diagnosis that has since been contradicted. It's so frustrating and confusing.
I find myself bargaining with God, if He heals her I'll be a better daughter, I'll go to NY more often, just please help her. It's awful to hear her out of it and depleted. She can be bossy but she's probably the best person I know and I have never ever heard her like this, not when my dad died, not when her own parents and sister and brother died. It's so sad and scary.

Prayers for your mom. My ex had a surgery for that same exact problem. It was a tough surgery. Mostly she will need to rest and eat well. With diverticulitis if you eat small seeds or popcorn or nuts, it gets stuck in your gut and causes inflammation and infection. It is curable with surgery though, and she may feel better after she heals. My ex felt 1000 times better. He begged for them to do the surgery because his bowels were so inflamed. Just wanted to let you know my experience with this condition.

Thanks so much to all! Leitend, thank you for sharing your experiences. I'm so glad to hear your ex recovered and felt better although the tough surgery part.. that's scary. But as long as she recovers it's worth it.
Praying for you and your family. Perhaps add in some prayers for yourself - that you will find the strength and willingness to trust in God and his will. That serenity prayer is a beaut in these situations.
Never hesitate to ask for what you/we
need in life. Asking for prayers and reading
or hearing responses from others who
show compassion or concern is sooooo
powerful.
All of us in sometime or another are
faced with some sought of life situation
where we need strength, patience and
hope that whatever it is will get better.
The POWER of PRAYER does work
when we reach out for it and reach
deep down within us with faith and
sincere willingness.
Sending prayers for your mom asking
my HP, God of my understanding to
strengthen you during this uncertain
time to guide and keep you in His care
and loving arms.

Again, many thanks to all, it means so much. I wholeheartedly believe in the power of prayer. They are doing a test (CAT scan? CT scan?) about an hour from now (at noon Eastern time) and then decide on surgery, or not.
I spoke with her a short time ago. She feels awful. Hates the hospital and the foul tasting stuff they give her to drink. Just breaks my heart to hear her in this state.
Thanks so much for your good thoughts and prayers. It does help me to know and I believe it helps her too.

They did the test (CT or CAT, I don't know) and the results are bad. She needs surgery, tonight or tomorrow. I fly to New York tonight.
I told her on the phone this morning I was worried and she said she's sorry. ( Not in a manipulative way. She truly is sorry her illness is causing worry.

53500 - Prayers going up for you & your mom. I'm glad you're coming to NY to be with her - that will mean the world to both of you. We'll be thinking of you. Please let us know how it's going when you can
