Update from New York

Hi friends, I am writing from my mom's house in NY on my very small and slow travel computer. This is the first chance I've had to log in.

They removed a large mass from her colon. The mass was sent to a pathologist and we do not yet know the results of what it is. She has a colostomy bag.

She came through the surgery and woke up, thank God. She was on a respirator for about 12 hours. Her vital signs are good.

But - she is very very weak. They got her into a chair today with difficulty. She was able to put a tiny bit of weight on her feet with two nurses holding her. She was in the chair about 45 minutes and was exhausted. However she really needs to be upright because she's not breathing deeply enough and has some deflated spot on her lung. They did a CAT scan and no fluid which is good, but she has to start breathing better.

Most concerning - although not out of the range of normal two days post-op - is her elimination system isn't working. The drs want to see (or hear, they listen to bowel sounds) signs of bowel function before letting her eat. So she has a tube in her nose for liquid nutrition.

She's so tired and so sad about the tube and about being so weak. She used to go dancing and play golf several times a week! It's very heartbreaking to see her like this. She wants so much to go home but we don't have any idea when that will happen.

She's going to start PT tomorrow so hopefully she'll gain some strength and her body will start functioning again so she can eat.

So that's it. I'm glad I came but man I wish she'd feel better.

Again thanks to all for your support. It means so much

I'm so glad you posted an update - was thinking about you.

It's understandable that she's exhausted - that's a lot to go through at 84. The emotional part of it too. Starting PT tomorrow - that's encouraging - they must think she is strong enough. Prayers for her to be able to eat & have the tube removed. I'm sure she's comforted by your presence.

53500...I am so glad that she marched through the surgery and is into the post-op period.
I have spent much of my life in hospitals (working)...and, it is generally a good sign when they are feisty and co mplaining and want to go home!
Thanks for the update.....
Please let us know how it goes and how your are doing when you can...

Thanks so much again for the continuing prayers and support. I totally believe the prayers are heard and answered.

My mom still has the tubes which she hates. BUT today there were signs of bowel function! So maybe another day or two and they'll take them out? I don't know, the surgeon has to weigh in but thank God for some progress.

Her vital signs are all good. The kidney dr said he's done, her kidneys are fine. Yesterday she walked with a walker and the help of the PT! The PT, a very nice (and nice looking) (hey you're never too old to look) young man was very pleased with her abilities. Unfortunately, as today was Sunday, no PT was available so she stayed in bed. She's so tired of it all, the discomfort, the weakness, the tubes.

However - she is alive and recovering even if its slow and for that I'm so very grateful.

Tomorrow I return to California. I have 3 brothers. Two live in NY, one in CA and he arrives tonight. So they'll be here. I feel guilty leaving but this is just about the worst possible time for me to miss work. Of course if something urgent happened I'd stay but she is stable, if uncomfortable.

Love to all.

Such a relief. The fact that she's annoyed is probably a good sign. Doesn't sound like she's withdrawn & lethargic. I'm happy to hear the hopeful news.

Safe journey back to Cali.

Back home

Well, I am back home in L.A. Nice to be home but I feel bad leaving her in this condition. The one brother who lives in CA arrived in NY last night. He will stay at least a week so that is a help to the two who live in NY.

Hevyn, she is not withdrawn and lethargic, now that you mention it. Her mood varies from feeling optimistic to saying "I'm never getting out of here" to just being so weary of feeling weak and uncomfortable. Sometimes she has pain but does not want the pain meds because they knock her out. But sometimes she takes them. It seems to me and my brothers she gets good care but she says no, she doesn't.

We had good news today, before I left. Bowel function returned! So they removed the feeding tube and she could *finally* drink a little cranberry juice and eat jello. That was great!

We are still waiting for the pathologist's report on the mass they took out, to learn if it's cancer. Prayer that it's not are appreciated.

Love to all..
