I think you hit the nail on the head

Actually, I don't think it's an "all men" thing, but rather an "all alcoholic/addict" thing.

I gasp when my dad told me over the phone (since he's in another state) about the bleeding ulcer and immediately asked if he had been to the doctor. Nope...but he "assured" me that he had talked to a girl up there who he knows from one of the clubs and who happens to be a nurse of some kind. And he feels satisfied that things will be okay...since of course he has no health insurance and can't afford to see a REAL doctor!!! And BECAUSE THE GIRL FROM THE BEER JOINT SAID SO!!!!! URG :banghead:

I have come to believe that these addicts are so anti-docs because they KNOW they are screwing up their bodies and the KNOW they are slowly killing themselves...they just don't want to have to face up to that fact many times and other times, they don't really want to know how TRUELY bad they are from their own actions. It's either a pride thing or a fear thing. One or the other I believe.

But it makes all of us who love them and who have to just sit here on our hands and not being able to do a darn thing about it...well it makes us just want to SCREAM!!!! But, alas, screaming won't do any good either so I don't anymore, but boy I sure want to sometimes though! Actually I want to smack em' all :slap: and say WAKE UP YOU NIMRODS!!! CAN'T YOU SEE HOW THINGS ARE FROM WHERE I'M STANDING AND WHY DON'T YOU SEEM CARE THAT YOU'RE KILLING YOURSELF -- NOT TO MENTION THAT YOUR KILLING OUR SPIRITS AS WELL BECAUSE WE'RE THE ONES WHO HAVE TO WATCH YOU DIE ??????!!!!!!!

I know they can't help it though and I know I can't help them either, but sometimes I just wish I could wiggle my nose or wave a wand and *POOF* -they be fixed. If only it were that easy I'd be a billionaire.

You know the saying "Your body is a temple?" I think alcoholics are supposed to learn what treating your body like a garbage dump will get you. Maybe we are supposed to learn that from seeing them. Just a thought. M

Hey serenity,
Yes it's scary to see how people treat their health so poorly. But worrying and trying to control someone else's health does absolutely no good. It's their health. I have done research on medical conditions, nagged about how he should see a doctor. I had to turn it over. I was wasting energy that I could be putting into my recovery.

The first part of "Live and Let Live" is "live." That is where my attention should be. The second part is "let live." Letting go of trying to control others is the number one focus of us anons. It is what got us to the emotional devestation that made us reach out in the first place. When we let go of others, and focus on ourself, we begin to heal.

I know that Mr. Magic has treated his body very badly for many years. He avoids going to the doctor A) because he is afraid of what is wrong, and B) because he doesn't believe that it will do any good. I can't convince him otherwise. It doesn't hurt to talk to someone about what you see them doing. I just have to be sure not to get caught up in trying to control, manipulate, or take on responsibilities that aren't mine.

I am scared that the results of Mr Magics actions will cause him to be incapacitated, or ultimately die. I had to realize that I don't have control of when or if people die. All I have is today. I try to find the good, and appreciate it. I don't want to waste the time I do have with worry and fear if I can help it. Hugs, Magic

No, men are not the only ones to avoid doctors

My A best friend, who cut off all communication about a year ago gets so ill after drinking the one, two, three litres of wine she's taking most days that she can't get up all day.

Noone can tell her that the pain she's feeling is the dreadful damage she's doing to herself. It's a "bad tummy".

She's done the whole thing, lost her friends, lost her social life, lost her occupation, moved to another continent (we get national health service free here, over in Canada you have to have health insurance, but, of course, she and her 3 kids don't have any), is in complete denial and is not so slowly drinking herself into an early grave.

Free health care?? In Scotland did you say???

If I were to move there...how long do you think it would take before I could qualify for such a thing???? Would it involve having to become a citizen and all that. Hmmmm. That's verrry interrresting.

Wow!! What a cool concept!!

Bahookie,

I live in Canada and we have free health care here!

Any citizen can go to any doctor or hospital in the country and get free health care, including free medical tests, xrays, seeing specialists, physiotherapy. etc.

We do have to pay for prescriptions, though low-income people and seniors pay only a small amount. Many companies do offer health insurance which will pay for prescriptions and any extra health care charges, such as a private room in a hospital, glasses, dental care.

Our system is not perfect by any means, but it's pretty good!!

Love, Anna

yeah...

My friend hadn't completed her immigration when I last spoke to her (got married to guy off the internet and had been given extension after extension to get her and her kids medicals done but absolutely refused to go do it, probably because she's scared and probably because her new husband had to financially support her and kids for a year as part of the immigration.)

jeeze, i'll stop for breath after that!

This brings up another thing in my head. How do you find a way to accept such seemingly insane behaviour? Marrying someone just to try and escape to another place and life (but taking yourself with you whereever you go) needing to be a canadian citizen (but refusing to comply with the process) drinking till you pass out at night, every night, chucking up in front of the kids (but feeling so bad and ill the next day that you can't get up to talk to a single person outside the house, never mind be productive)

By the way, I've no idea how you get citizenship here! And yip, all healthcare is free, apart from prescriptions which cost £5.80 and the dentist. If you're on a low income it's ALL free! Hooray!

J

Korsakoff's syndrome is a brain disorder that is usually associated with heavy drinking over a long period. Although it is not strictly speaking a dementia, people with the condition experience loss of short term memory. This sheet outlines the causes, symptoms and treatment of the syndrome.

This was taken off the Alzheimer's Society website under dementia.
