I had a bit of an epiphany towards the end of the workday today.
Had someone show up without an appointment for a hearing test. She was old enough to be my mother.
The first breach was her touching my forehead and asking about a dimple. Mind you, I had met her for the first time 15 minutes earlier.
Halfway through the test, she asks, "are you married?"
Not too long ago, I would have felt morally obligated to answer her.
I answered, "that is a LONG story."
She asks, "on again, off again?"
I answered, "That is a LONG story I would rather not get into here."
A few minutes later, she said, "I don't really care if you're married, I was just making conversation."
I answered, "GOOD. It will be easier on the both of us!"

I grew up in a very deprived area, but am nevertheless quite well-spoken. I was at a dinner party recently talking to one of the guests, when someone else kept butting in, basically asking how come I spoke the way I did, when I come from such a rough area.
To begin with, I'd just deflect her questions; then I progressed to 'Not something I want to talk about right now...' and in the end I just said 'Mind your own business!'
She burst into tears. She tearfully told me she wasn't being nosy (yes she was!) or prurient (yes she was!) - but there are people who think they have the right to pry into others' affairs and are quite affronted when they can't.
Not my problem. Or yours, Eauchiche - and well done!

I read a rather amusing story about a young lady of mixed ethnicity on a public conveyance.
A total stranger got inquisitive, and asked her "what" she was. She noticed he was wearing Argyle socks.
She contrived a brilliant story about the Island of Argyle, off the coast of Africa someplace. She eloquently described their language, culture and cuisine.
The "gentleman" totally bought it!
