My first meeting

I am planning on going to my first meeting tonight. I am totally lost as to which one/what type to go to. My daugheters father is an alcoholic and drug addict, more so drugs. Does it matter if I go to NA or AA? Also, what if I'm the only one who is there because of the damage caused by a loved one? Will I still find support even if all of the people attending are there for their own addiction?

Can you get to an Alanon meeting? I have never been to AA or NA but have been going to Alanon for the past three months and it's been an incredibly welcoming place where I feel very safe.

If you go to an "open" meeting (AA or NA) then you will be welcome. Those meetings are open to friends, family, students, those who are simply curious.

I've never been to an NA meeting.

Have you been to Nar-Anon or Al-Anon? Might be good to hit a couple of those meetings first.

Sorry if this sounds stupid, but isn't AA Al-Anon and NA Nar-Anon?

Oh, and BTW, I wouldn't go for "support" to either an AA or NA meeting--even though open meetings are open to anyone, the purpose of the meeting is to help those who are alcoholics or addicts get clean/sober and stay that way. It's good to attend a couple just to help you understand alcoholism/addiction, but don't go looking to those meetings for support for you. That's what Al-Anon and Nar-Anon are there for.

No, AA is "Alcoholics Anonymous" and it is for alcoholics. NA is "Narcotics Anonymous" and is for addicts.

Al-Anon and Nar-Anon are for family/friends.

These are four completely different programs (though they all use the 12 steps). The focus is different.

Good for you for getting some support.
This is what you are looking for
Alanon Massachussets Meeting locator:
http://www.ma-al-anon-alateen.org/findameeting.php
Nar Anon meeting locator:
Find a Group — Nar-Anon Family Groups

I have never been to Na Anon but I am pretty sure you could go to either.
Al Anon has more meetings
