I forget who here said "the best way to deal with a narcissist is with great compassion, from a great distance."
While narcissists are painful and horrible to deal with, I try to remind myself (which is easier now that I'm no longer married to one) that they did not choose this disorder and part of their disorder is an absolute lack of insight into their illness. Like I tell my kids when someone's mistreating them in school -- you only have to go to school with them; imagine the hell it must be to wake up every morning and be them.

I have a personal hunch that 'difficult' people are giving us a little taste of what it's like to be them; I think we can be fairly sure that very critical people are also giving themselves the same treatment - inside their own heads.
I've found remembering this, and feeling compassionate, makes them easier to deal with.
As for engaging with a narcissist? Don't.
