As an update, cancelling plans was actually a very smart decision. Spending time with him away from home in hotels is excruciating. It was bad years ago. Now he cannot even go to a restaurant here in town with me without being under the influence! And just like you WendyOR, I am the one who does the research, books the room, looks for the maps, checks the weather forecast, makes a list, accommodates all my plans to fit in, and then the day before we leave, he puts on a show because we have to go to the store (my bags being packed, and he has not even started!).

The weekend was OK, the Labor Day is OK so far. We did not talk much, we did not fight, he is either sleeping or drinking behind the closed door. I am doing my work and staying away. That is all I can do for now.

And yes, things got much worse as I started detaching.
