OT - Update on the college situation

I thought I would post an update for those of you who were interested in the thread I had running about a month ago about my son's college admission. Boston College was his choice out of the schools that accepted him, but through some miscommunications we only got their financial aid proposal yesterday. Their scholarship offer could not hold a candle to NYU. So, because he would prefer to graduate as debt-free as possible, he chose NYU. My little baby is going to the Big Apple! It seems like only a couple of weeks ago I was rocking him in front of the Christmas tree as a newborn. It's strange to feel sad and excited all at the same time for the same reasons.

Start spreadin' the news....

That's wonderful! Congrats to you both!

As a person who is going to be paying off my college debt when I am 99 years old, good for him for making the right choice!

Awesome!!! Hey, I have friends here in Phoenix whose son is a junior and was looking at both NYU and Boston College and I'm meeting with her next week for dinner to hear about how the college visits went last week. Her son is highly academic and goes to a private Jesuit college prep high school here in town.

I hope he really enjoys NYC. I grew up 20 miles outside the city, in NJ, and I still miss that part of the East Coast.

OMG! He just called me from school to tell me he got an email from Brown University! He's been accepted off the waitlist! He was so excited, he couldn't even wait till after school to tell me. I'm so happy for him! And plans continue to change. Hopefully, this is it. I think it will be because he told me that even if Yale and Brown both accepted him, he would prefer Brown.

And, in a hilarious bit of irony, the sweatshirt we ordered from NYU just arrived! LOL

Your post brings tears to my eyes, and a bit of sadness in my heart that I soooooo understand. I have one leaving this coming fall as well.

Congrats on raising a financially smart young man!

The NYU sweatshirt will never go out of style

I just have to say, if you had stayed stuck I doubt you would have had all these "1st world problems" with your son like amazing college choices. You probably would have had real problems related to emotional health and poor self esteem.

You done good.

Jazz,

It's crossed my mind more than once that this outcome might have never come to be. My son was an extremely introverted and sometimes very angry child when his father and I were together. He only began to really thrive when I separated and moved away.

These last couple of months have been quite the emotional roller coaster with different colleges and plans changing, but there's no downside to any of it. (Well, other than the $1500 non-refundable deposit to NYU I paid last week!)

And I just want to say to anyone here who feels stuck, it's never too late to take back your life and your children's lives. You can have a beautiful future and so can they, starting from where-ever you are right now.

L

P.S. He wore the NYU sweatshirt to school today.

I love this thread. Congrats to your son and yourself!

LaTeeDa - you, your sharing, and your story have been an inspiration to me since I joined and it continues to be.

My children are a little bit younger (time is flying though!) and our lives seem to be heavy on challenges and light on parents but reading other people's milestones and successes really helps to keep me focused on the positives/blessings I have. So thank you for continuing to share!
