I think sometimes humor is a good way to deal with a situation. Sometimes it's laugh or cry and it's just better to laugh. I take addiction very seriously as I've been addicted to more than one thing. But that doesn't mean I won't laugh about it, too. There's threads in the Alcoholism section here like "You might be a recovering alcoholic if.." and "You might be an alcoholic if..." and while many of the entries are serious, many of them are also funny. Or there was a thread I read about places people peed when they were drunk, which also had me cracking up laughing. That doesn't mean I don't realize how awful and serious it is for the people that have experienced their drunk partners wetting the bed.

When some people make light (jokes) about a subject, it can be a way of coping, dealing with, or being able to talk about it. It can be overwhelming to be so serious about serious topics all the time.
Try not to take offense, unless they are blatant in their callousness, jokes about bad things (cancer, addiction) are simply some of us trying smile about the things we have no control over in life.
