Therapist put AH on meds with no diagnosis??????
I moved out from AH in May. Starting my daughter in counseling this week. AH is starting therapy but only for his anger and depression. Says he is tired of being mean. Not worried about his drinking though. Says he has that under control........Whatever
He went for physch eval on Saturday and this is what doc prescribed him;
xanax 2mg - 1/2 - 1 every 6 to 8 hrs
Topomax 25 mg 1-2 tab am
50mg 1-2 tab pm
Viibryd 30mg - forget how often
I asked what he diagnosised him with and he said nothing yet??????
He only went off symptoms that AH told him about.
Am I missing something????????

Sounds like a pill pusher Dr.
My Dr is the same. I tend to do quite a bit of research on medications before I take them now. and I am not a pill popper. I am an alcoholic. My Dr prescribed me on Xanax and Wellbutrin for depression.
I figured out my depression and anxiety were all just a result from my alcohol abuse and the longer I stayed away from alcohol the less anxious and depressed I was.
But I do understand everyone is different.
Good Luck

That doesn't sound right.... it's dangerous to prescribe medication without a valid diagnosis. Either doc knows more than he's telling, or... well, I don't know.
Are you sure those are the correct dosages? Did you read them off of the prescription or the medicine bottle?
Topamax (topiramate) is a drug used to treat seizures and migraines. According to the Topamax website:
So, the fact that the doctor would prescribe that much so soon is a bit unsettling.
Viibryd (vilazodone) is a SSRI used to treat depression.
Xanax (alprazolam) is used to treat anxiety, insomnia and panic disorders.
This trifecta of pills is quite toxic in and of itself -- and then you add the alcohol to the mix.

The rule with TOPAMAX is to "start low and go slow." That is, your healthcare professional will adjust your medication. You'll start with a low dose and then slowly increase the amount of TOPAMAX you take until you reach the dosage that works best for you.

I'm sorry. I should have expanded. I meant that the doctor might have given him a diagnosis that he didn't tell you about. I don't think you can believe what he says.
It's also possible the doctor is a total pill pusher. Still, I think he'd have to have some diagnosis, even if it were just depression, to get meds. They've got to put something on the chart.

I am familiar with xanax, but not the other two. Can you google "if someone is on A,B,C, what is his diagnosis?" You could probably find something online about it.
That said, maybe your time would be better spent working on YOU.

Whenever my AH told me something that didn't make any sense, I finally figured out that it was because he wasn't giving me the whole story. So if you're confused and exasperated with the information he's giving you, consider that he might be yanking your chain.
Yeah, I call hogwash on pretty much anything my AW says.
She used to tell me every month that she was going to see her therapist. In the throws of a very bad weekend, her mother reported that she hasn't been to see the therapist for a long, long time.
Recently while going through our 2012 taxes I found some medical documentation. She was clearly diagnosed with drug and Alcohol addictions.
My AW has no problem lying to my face. She'd tell me water wasn't wet if it'd protect her problems.

That is my thoughts exactly. I said something to him about the combo with beer and he said the doc knows and if these meds make him feel better, then he might need to drink............ He must think I am stupid. I am just worried about the kids when they are there. Made a comment to him about it and he just said, "they are fine, I wouldn't put them in jeopardy. If I don't feel right thten I will call you".
This was all pre-Al Anon days for me, too. Now, my AH is on 3 different meds which specifically state: DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL WHILE TAKING THIS MEDICATION. He still drinks and I work my program. At this point, the diagnosis doesn't matter, the meds don't matter, etc because he's going to do what he's going to do. I need to take care of me.
