I completely agree with Dolly.
Doing positive, good things for you and your kids will help you to begin a new life. You cannot control the outcome of this, but you certainly can change YOUR direction, and point yourself in the direction of a happier tomorrow. Now, is as good of a time as any, to start thinking for yourself. Living in limbo is hell. Time to stop living in limbo, accept his words at face value.
Reading along with your story, something struck a chord of familiarity. In time, more will be revealed . I cannot help think there is/was someone else in this equation. He just isn't coming clean at this time.
