He Said Water Is Boring!

I asked him why he was drinking beer at 8:00 in the morning. He said he was thirsty. I said why you drink some water if you are thirsty and he said "Water is Boring".

I don't think I have ever seen him drink water. He always has a bottle of beer in his hand. 24/7

Wow. That is a pretty lame excuse. Alcoholics do not even enjoy alcohol for the taste. They enjoy booze for the effect or escape from reality. IMO when a drinker advances to drinking in the morning phase it is a very bad sign.

OK, totally innapropriate of me and not disrespecting your frustration but that's funny.

Water is boring.

So is Cardio and a lot of unhealthy foods but there are reasons other than excitement for some of the things we do.

Boring? LOL.

Send him my way - if he's going to rationalize you should at least get a laugh out of it...
Boring? What a boring excuse.

I stopped drinking at home and rarely drink at all now but when I do (no not Dos Equis) I generally drink straight Bourbon with just a drop of water (go to a tasting with master distillers, they show you how adding a drop or two of water brings out flavors) anyhow...

One time I ordered a double bourbon with a glass of ice on the side and a companion asked why I didn't mix it with water.... "Fish F--k in it". ...not an original, think I heard it from Carlin or someone way back when but at least that's better than 'Boring'... what a boring answer.

...but still made me laugh

GoodKarma you'll have to forgive me too because I also see the humor in something that I recognize is ultimately tragic and painful.

But at some level, what did you expect him to say?

"Is it only 8 am? My goodness me, I hadn't realized! Please! Take this beer and be rid of it. I am only thirsty, please fetch me that cold pitcher of water with ice and lemon. My beautiful woman, thank you for being here to point out the error of my ways. I am so very sorry for my transgressions. What can I do to make your life better today?"

If only my ex had responded like that in the mornings! The last time I tried to have a "rational" conversation with them about their 7 am beers in a futile effort to curb another day and night of non-stop drinking, they wound up taking the valium their doctor had prescribed to them, then drinking immediately on top of it, and running down the street with a guitar in a blackout.

As for myself, I was the one in error still trying to "influence" rather than "control" their alcoholism (it's basically the same thing). As such I was allowing myself to get deeply hurt in the process. The bottom line is I shouldn't have been there any longer.

It is tragic and painful. It is progressive. I heard something in a meeting (12 step) Friday night. Addiction is progressive- BUT so is recovery.......when we choose it.........Alanon.......<3

I can still remember how surprised I was when I discovered that my father had beer in his coffee cup. I think I was 12-years-old and I remember instantly realizing how bad his problem with alcohol truly was.

I agree that it's a sign that things are heading downhill fast.

When we were growing up my dad would constantly tell my mom that he went to bars because she was boring. Ha, he would take me to the bars he hung out in and they were not filled with many exciting people (IMHO).

Funny and yet sad at the same time.

Thank you for letting me share.

My mother use to start drinking at 5pm...then it was 3pm...then 12 noon...now it's in her
coffee cup before 10am. She drinks brandy manhattans, strong suckers. Never been in recovery, never stopped once in 66+ years, how she is alive is beyond me.

My dad used to say this, until the day he died. He did drink iced tea or coffee during the day as he wasn't an early drinker but I never saw him drink water.
