My Father In Law Has Been Diagnosed With Alcohol Induced Pancreatitis

I'm very worried My Father In Law who was a drinker for 25 years Has Been Hospitalized With Alcohol Induced Pancreatitis.
The Day After Thanksgiving he was put in the hospital. They are telling us he has severe Alcohol Induced Pancreatitis and that he will be there a month.
The Drinking become more heavier over the last 3 years and with-in the last 2 months he was drinking a 12 pack a night and on week-ends 18 to 24 pack.
I'm not here to judge him I'm just very worried. And thought maybe someone here good give me some in-sight to this disease.
They have already done 2 CT Scans on his stomach and the pain level has went from on a scale 1-10 to a 6 or 7 which also has me concerned.
We haven't heard back from the second ct scan..
I'm sorry to rattle on but his family and I are very very worried.
Hugs
& Thank You All.

I am so sorry to hear this! My brother-in-law also appears to be very sick from alcohol related issues (possibly liver failure), so I feel your pain. I hope 2013 will be a year of healing...All the best to him, you, and your family!

People don't generally know the dangerous effects that alcohol has..My ex,and father of my 1st son, died at the age of 39 last year. He got alcohol induced pancreatitis as well at the age of 22,and continued to drink, only beer, but drank every day of his life,,even though he was told alcohol would kill him if he continued. So he chose to drink and 17 years later left this world, and the father role to my son. Very sad,and very scary.
Your father inlaw has a big decision ahead of him,,hopefully he never touches the drink again. Hope things get better!

I'm so very very sorry for your loss, it's horrible what addictions do to people and their families.. Thank You for the well wishes and I'm just worried it may be too late for him.. I'm trying to stay positive but it's hard at times.
Thank You so much for your reply.
Hugs

My AH has chronic pancreatitis - alcohol related. Originally diagnosed at 38 acute continued to drink for 2 years to chronic. Also developed type 1 diabetes (they consider it type 1 when it comes from pancreatitis). I can only give you his experience as I can't give you medical advice.

he was also hospitalized for a month initially in a coma with not good odds. SO, don't lose hope.

As far as pain - it is considered the most painful disease next to bone cancer. Unfortunately one of the negatives of chronic pancreatitis is pain management and pain killer addiction. Hopefully that will not happen you your FIL if he stays acute. The way it is treated is by stopping all food intake. The inflammation of the pancreas causes the biliary ducts, which feed our digestive enzymes into the intestines, to swell therefore the enzymes (which are akin to battery acid) stay inside the pancreas. By stopping food intake you stop the production of the enzymes and allow the inflamation to subside. You can have other complications that come from the gall bladder as well as well as cysts on the pancreas that can cause problems.

The pancreas is a very elusive organ, we also watch too much Dr. TV and it would seem there is a pill or something that can be done for everything. Not so for pancreatitis other than to manage the pain and stop the food. I spent many hours and days searching for specialists that could help because certainly there had to be something else that can be done. But to my knowledge as of today there is not.

It is manageable. It is possible to only ever have one attack unless you become chronic. This is done by complete abstinence of alcohol and to strictly control the diet. Fat, aside from alcohol, is enemy #1. My husband has ended up in the hospital from eating fried food. Fat is necessary in the diet but we have switched him to healthy fats. Stay away from processed foods and ANY hydrogenated oil. It is much better to eat real butter than to eat fake. Red meat is also very, very difficult to digest we only do it every great once in a while and its always lean, and very little fat (no more filet mignon).

A dietician consultation would be great for him.....my husband health has improved dramatically in the last two years. We seldom eat out - but I like to cook so that works out for us.

I really hope your FIL doesn't continue to drink when he gets out but unfortunately many do - my husband did as I mentioned before. This was before my time - if there was one thing he could do in life it would have been to stop then (or never start). Diabetes is a very serious consequence of pancreatitis - 2 major surgeries as well. Now isn't the time but treatment after he gets out of the hospital is a must.

I am so sorry this has happened - trust me I can relate. If you have any questions feel free to PM me.
