Why would you need to speak with someone's sponsor? Unless you were not minding your own side of the street? If you need to speak to someone's sponsor, that's a sure sign you need to get your own.
In some ways one's legal responsibilities and one's recovery responsibilities are going to clash. If you want full custody contingent on your ex's recovery or lack thereof, for example, they're going to have to be able to "prove" their recovery time. That's an Al-Anon no-no, but at the same time, one could and should push this angle in court if their ex isn't following a treatment plan and they want to spend time alone with their children.

I understand why people get cranky about this, but IMO some of the "keep your side of the street clean" rhetoric hangs our kids out to dry when they're still forced to maintain a relationship with a sick parent. Needing proof of sponsorship and meeting attendance is a comparatively minor violation.
