Frankly, I don't think "socially responsible" or "respectful of women" could be applied to any of party-boy Taio Cruz's music. |
Maybe its just me being a blonde, but when I was a teenager, I rarely noticed the lyrics. It wasn't until just a few years ago that I learned that the Doobie Brothers band was not named after the family with the last name Doobie. That said - my teenagers aren't allowed to play this crap in my presence. Yuck. |
It's funny how it strikes you sometimes -- there's another popular song right now that talks about a guy watching his (ex?)girlfriend across the room and seeing a scar she has, and he says "I know I gave it to you months ago. I know you're trying to forget." and that song just infuriates me. So that's romantic? Wanting to get back together with a woman you abused? What the everloving F? |
I sometimes blame all those songs(and movies too) that trivialize and glamorize drinking for me growing up thinking that heavy drinking isn't really that bad of a thing to do. I can't believe how naive I was. What upsets me the most is the Two and a Half Men series that portrays heavy chronic drinking and womanizing as a humorous lifestyle. A sleazy alcoholic who treats women in a degrading way and views them as objects. This is funny???? |
Good Point and I agree... ...though Paxton's resonates differently with me-- sort of sad, melancholy and painful. C-

same could have been said when Tom Paxton wrote Bottle of Wine in 1964: Bottle of wine, Fruit of the vine When you gonna let me get sober Let me alone, let me go home Let me go back and start over Ramblin' around this dirty old town Singin' for nickels and dimes Times getting tough; I ain't got enough To buy a little bottle of wine CHORUS Little hotel, older than Hell Dark as the coal in the mine Blankets are thin; I lay there and grin 'Cause I got a little bottle of wine CHORUS Pain in my head and bugs in my bed Pants are so old that they shine Out on the street, tell the people I meet Won'cha buy me a bottle of wine CHORUS Well the preacher will preach; teacher will teach A miner will dig in the mine I ride the rods, trusting in God A-huggin' my bottle of wine CHORUS my point being, there have always been songs that glamorize the darker side......... |

My kids are (I think) older than your son, liza -- and I use those songs as learning opportunities. There's also one (and I can't remember the artist OR the title, again -- remember when you thought your parents were complete morons for not knowing who the Top 20 artists were? Yeah, I'm there...) where the lyrics go something along the lines of "I'm trying to find the words to describe her/without being disrespectful..." and then immediately goes to, "the way that booty moves..." (it always has my girls in stitches saying things like, "would someone PLEASE buy that guy a dictionary? Or a brain transplant?" ;) |

I believe this one is from: Fun. and the song is called "We are Young"???? I know the band is Fun. and I won't let my son play that song when it comes on in the radio. That was the first lyric I noticed about the scar and how he wants to make it up to her. |
