Veritas1 posted a great AA Big Book quote this morning that I thought was relevant to share here on the F&F forum:

"Let no alcoholic say he cannot recover unless he has his family
back. This just isn't so. In some cases the wife will never come
back for one reason or another. Remind the prospect that his
recovery is not dependent upon people. It is dependent upon his
relationship with God. We have seen men get well whose families
have not returned at all. We have seen others slip when the family
came back too soon."

I believe this quote is an important one for us on this side of the fence because of the dichotomy between personal responsibility and marital commitments. I know I struggled for a long time with the guilt that came with leaving my RAH to find his own path and me finding mine. It simply was not something we could do together, successfully.

Thank you. I love the AA Big Book's eloquence and truth, and appreciate this unexpected surprise of a passage from it today. The Big Book has helped me in my recovery as a codependent, and in my desire to be a better human being.
