Wants versus Needs

I was pondering 'wants versus needs' for another thread (based on some old psychology study I did) and came accross this list on wikepedia. Doyal and Gough who came up with the list, point to eleven broad categories of "intermediate needs" that define how the need for physical health and personal autonomy are fulfilled:

Adequate nutritional food and water
Adequate protective housing
A safe environment for working
A supply of clothing
A safe physical environment
Appropriate health care
Security in childhood
Significant primary relationships with others
Physical security
Economic security
Safe birth control and child-bearing
Appropriate basic and cross-cultural education.

These are some basic 'needs' not 'wants'!
A need is something that is necessary for organisms to live a healthy life (definition).

Many of us on SR often complain of having these 'needs' trampled on or unmet by our alcoholic other, or maybe we are just not looking after our own needs in order to be healthy. It is just occuring to me how little we really do accept for ourselves.

I thought that it was an interesting way to look at our situation. Forget love, are we having our 'needs' met?
