This too shall pass AL ANON slogan

this too shall pass:

We work the Al ANON program one day at a time, keeping our attention focused on the present moment rather than on the past or on projections of the future. There are times, however, when the present moment may seem too full of pain to bear, and the unhappiness we experience may feel everlasting and insurmountable.

Change can be a frightening prospect for many of us. When we do not feel secure in ourselves, in our relationships with others, or in our place in the world, we may feel compelled to hold fast to the status quo. The status quo may not be stisfying or productive, but its safe, it is familiar, and we feel more in control.

Whether we like it or not, change is a constant and there present moment cannot be frozen in time. As we work the program and the improve our contact with our Higher Power, we gradually learn to accept the changes that life brings us. Some changes may upset the delicate balance of our serenity, and we may experience anxiety; some changes may bring blessed relief from an intolerable siturations and we may feel gratitude.

The phrase: THIS TOO SHALL PASS helps us recongnize that nothing lasts forever, neither joy nor tragedy, and we do get through our difficulties--the program provides us with the tools and our Higher Pwer provides us with the strength.

The camellia was chosen to illustrate THIS TOO SHALL PASS because its blossom, while strikingly beautiful, is delicate and transient. No matter how profound our sadness, the camellia reminds us that it is not a permanent state, not will it continue to affect us in the same way.

The present moment may not always be serene, but we can achieve serentiy by allowing each moment (and ourselves) to evolve according to our Higher Power's plan.

Thanks Maggie for posting this. One of my favorite Alanon slogans and so true - life does march on and things always change. It has helped me through many a hard day.

When I was younger whenever something bad was happening my granny used to say This too shall pass.
I hated it. To me it felt like the worst possible thing to say. Like by saying that it makes it ok that the bad thing is happening. To me it felt like surrender while I had this huge need to fight anything bad, to prevent it from happening. I guess I wanted life on my own terms. I think this is one of the things that had me stuck in my marriage for years: inability to accept the life consists of bad things too, that we can't do anything but accept them, that if we spend our life trying to prevent them from happening we can only manage to drive ourselves crazy.
Nowdays, after all the pain and suffering I can appreciate the widsom of these words. I don't see them as surrender any more. I see them as being realistic. Taking life for what it really is: bad and good combined, where everything matters, but nothing matters too much. That life is a change and the only thing we can do is try to make the most of it.

Thank you, Fourmaggie! Especially during this time of year, many of us who are friends & family members of A's could use these loving reminders!
