Lost in translation: How the media glorifies Drunkeness

This song just came on, if anyone knows it:

'I need you now' by Lady Antebellum

It's a quarter after one, I'm a little drunk and I need you now
Said I wouldn't call but I lost all control and I need you now
And I don't know how I can do without...
I just need you now....

TRANSLATION:

1:15 - <ring> <ring> Hello? "Hey, er, <burp> I'm sworry babe, you know I luuve you. I'm such a jwerk... I ju...<click> (because we know how they accidently hang up in the middle of slurringly confessing their love).

1:16 - <ring> <ring> Hello? "Hey, ya knooow yer a b*tch, I trweated you sooo welll... <click> <-- That would be us hanging up.

I'm just sayin!

Ah, but if we look at it from a recovered drunk's point of view

You wouldnt lose all control and make that call.
You would be sleeping like an angel, with no need for "you"!

just yankin your chain ali.

Pretty much the reason I don't listen to country much since I got sober. I don't want to hear some song about how much fun they're having drinking. They might be but, I wasn't having that much fun at the end!

<rant on>

I was just railing (to the dogs) about Britney Spears song 'hit me baby one more time,' which I think is some kind of degrading codie anthem. "I must confess...I still believe"

Translation: I still think you can change into the kind of person I want you to be, if I say and do the right combination of things, which would be good, because I depend on you for all my happiness and have no intention of doing anything to help myself shake this damaging obsession.

The whole use of the word "Believe" (with a capital B) has been bugging me lately. It makes no sense whatsover. The guy's an idiot and a jerk and a drunk and has mistreated you....but you still 'believe' ? In what? In a fantasy world where he magically turns into somebody completely different. For you.

Codie. Codie. Codie.

<rant off>

Glad you guys are here because my german shepherd is sick of me b*tching about this, but he's too polite to leave the room. See my photos for the beautiful face of this poor rant-hostage. Oh, wait, there he goes. Sigh.

Oh, and this son is playing over and over again on top 40. THIS is what our daughters are listening to:

'Tick-Tock' - Kesha

Before I leave, brush my teeth with a bottle of Jack
Cause when I leave for the night, I ain’t coming back
I’m talking - pedicure on our toes, toes
Trying on all our clothes, clothes
Boys blowing up our phones, phones
Drop-toping, playing our favorite cds
Pulling up to the parties
Trying to get a little bit tipsy

TRANSLATION: - THIS is what a tipsy girl really acts like:

Oh, I could rant on and on about how much codie crap we are fed from the time we are toddlers. Cinderella? Give me a break! And the songs.....and the movies......Jerry MacGuire? Just an adult version of Cinderella! Sheesh. I can't believe I used to buy into all that load of garbage.

Luckily, we have choices and don't have to watch/listen to the crap. And there are actually artists out there making songs/movies etc. that are closer to reality. I prefer those now.

she loves it when i chuckle or laugh, looks up and wags at me.
when the rant is on, she sits there quietly waiting to wag again.

My dog knows "H.A.L.T., the 3C's, the 3 A's (Awareness, Acceptance, Action), 12 12 Steps and the Serenity Prayer by heart.

Whenever I go into stress mode, he won't leave my side, he has dried more tears from my eyes and I am eternally grateful to be owned by him. Now that I'm settled, so is he, sleeping peacefully on my bed knowing all is (pretty) OK with me today.

Excellent topic!

I was thinking about this the other day... there is a definite element of denial, disillusion and glossing over in the media... it never ceases to amaze me.... and what really gets me... is when you hear a child sing some of these lyrics

I think it's distorting going the other way, too. For example, whenever you see an alcoholic in a movie (such as Meg Ryan in "When a Man Loves a Woman" or Michael Keaton in "Clean and Sober") they are so self-destructive that, when I compare them to myself, I figure, "I guess I'm not an alcoholic so much, then." I think this image of alcoholism, and that a drinking problem can have no subtleties, no creeping damage, creates alot of room for rationalization and denial for real people with real problems.

UGH! The Miller Lite commercials are the ones that get me.

What if I was hanging on a cliff, would you rescue me or your beer?

I have to turn those commercials off! I hate them!

I am totally non-romantic (ask anyone who knows me) so all that Cinderella crapola never meant a thing to me. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Cinderella, but I never once though it was real. Or could be real, or in any way reflected reality.

You know what though, I don't watch movies and I don't listen to modern music either.

Okay okay, I need therapy...I know.

Ahhhhhh been years since I last watched a TV.

Hooray for On demand TV, and for Internet.

I LIKE that tik tok song.. for some reason I play that and Eminem when I am cleaning the bathroom ?? but I like it in the "like to dance to the tune without hearing the actual lyrics or giving them any importance" sense. Like Eminem.

Society is sick thus most media is, too, I also prefer alternative artists, theater, foreign movies, talented musicians, etc. that is actually food for the soul

LTD maybe you'd enjoy "The Last Summer of La boyita" an Argentinian film... I watched it in a film festival not long ago.

It liked "Up in The Air" too. George Clooney, what's not to like?

But I agree, the media does glorify drinking. As a recovering alcoholic, I see nothing cute, funny or entertaining about drunken behavior. I did see "The Hangover" in a hotel room as one of the free movies. It was just awful. Nothing funny or interesting or amusing about it.

Love,

Lenina
