devastated
Oh kitty I'm so sorry. I know how it will feel when mine reach the end of their time here and cross the bridge......just the same. They mean so much to us, these furry angels we are blessed with for a while. Sending you hugs and strength.

I've lost 3 dogs, 3 cats and a parrot in my "lifetime". It hurts and it's a cliche but time does heal. I've also found that adopting a new pet helped take my mind off things, not a replacement but a happy distraction.
Oh kitty, thats the saddest thing. I know what you are feeling, when my Jess died, I lost a soul mate. Here is a prayer, its sad, but believe in it, and you know what? I have jade, jess's daughter, and she rollicks around on my bed (where they both slept) like she is play fighting with air. Jess spirit, and when I walk Jade, I may as well be walking Jessie too, cos my left hand pulls like I have two dogs there. I dont care what anyone says, pets we love will be waiting for us in Heaven. Here is a hug (()) heres the prayer:
THE RAINBOW BRIDGE POEM
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Kitty, my heart goes out to you, and I can't help the tears coming. I haven't had another doggie pal since my much loved 16 year old collie, Lass, went to sleep with her head in my lap July 1964. I got her for my 5th birthday, the best present I have ever had, and certainly the longest lasting.
Cashfan, thanks so much for that poem: now I will be expecting to be bowled over and have my face kissed all over when I get to that Rainbow Bridge, just as it happened so long ago.
Oh, what memories will be with me as I sleep tonight.
God bless

thank you so much to everyone for their kind words and hugs. I really need them.
I've never had to play God before, and make a decision like that. I know it was for the best, it's just so difficult when Junior was the center of my universe for so long. I rescued him from an unloving home when he was 8, and we have been inseparable ever since. He came to the barns to work with me every day. Every trip I went on, unless it involved an airplane (which was rare), he went with. Every BBQ, polo game, fishing trip, camping trip, friend's house, everything, even trips just to the grocery store.
I adopted another dog a couple months ago, because deep down I knew this was coming. She is not a golden, but a small manchester terrier, and she bonded to me right away, just like Jr did. I think that is true, that goldens are just different than other breeds. I hope someday I can get another one, their devotion and personality is really second to none. Right now it's just so hard to even think about another one. But my little Missy is here by my side, and life goes on.
No matter how hard you try, you're just never ready to let go i guess.
