detox quetion

I was reading through some of the threads and saw the one about detox with everyone talking about how dangerous it is. i know no one is supposed to give medical advise, but i am just curious about some of the detox issues and how to know if it is bad enough to go to a dr about it or if anyone could point me to a website that would address that?
