If you could spare a few prayers please...
For my 21 year old daughter and her dog Toby? He was diagnosed with renal failure a couple of weeks ago, and had been kept comfortable on meds.
I am going to have to relieve her where she babysits today at noon, and she has to take him in to be euthanized. He's really gone downhill.
He's been her heart dog for 10 years now, and was approximately 4-6 years old (my vet's estimate) when I pulled him off of doggy death row at the local pound.
It's been a long hard weekend with lots of pain and crying.

(((DeVon))) - awwww, sweetie, I'm so sorry. Many, many prayers to you, Amber and Toby...not just for today, but for all the hard days to come. Lots and lots of hugs for you and Amber, too. Now I know why you and Amber were on my mind so much this weekend.
I'm keeping Anvil's post, along with Toby's picture in my head and trying not to cry along with you guys.
Hugs and prayers!

I have been through that experience and it is devastating. One of the most painful experiences of anyone's life. I am so sorry, Freedom. He was so lucky to be so deeply loved.
Prayers, of course, winging their way now.
Please print this out and give it to your daughter:
It does help, honest.
Love and hugs,

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Love and hugs,
He's joined our other bridge kids now. I'm just spent emotionally and physically. I've also got my systemic lupus dog (Miss Bug) at the vet's now on an IV and antibiotics. She took a nose dive on me, and I was worried it was the new immunosuppressive drug she's on. Labs showed white blood cell count was 3 X normal, so that's indicative of an infection. Poor little bugger was running a 104.6 fever.
I'm praying the next 24 hours show improvement. I can't take losing another one right now, especially a young one.

(((DeVon))) - okay, sweetie. Sending turbo charged prayers your way, for you, Amber and Miss Bug, while your Toby runs with Ann's Toby and the rest of our beloved furbabies on Rainbow Bridge.
Much love, and many hugs and prayers!

The Dance
Everyone who's ever truly loved their pet understands the pain you're feeling today. No one describes the love between a person and a dog better than Caroline Knapp in "Pack of Two: The Intricate Bond Between People an Dogs." Speaking of the "remarkable, mysterious, often highly complicated dance that goes on between dogs and their owners," she wrote:
That dance is about love. It's about attachment that's mutual and unambiguous and exceptionally private, and it's about a kind of connection that's virtually unknowable in human relationships because it's essentially wordless. It's not always a smooth and seamless dance, and it's not always easy or graceful--love can be a conflicted, uncertain experience no matter what species it involves--but it is no less valid because one of the partners happens to move on four legs.
--Excerpt from "For the Love of a Dog" by Patricial McConnell
May the memory of your beloved dog, Toby, bring you peace.
