OT-REALLY need advice from multiple-cat owners

from my knowledge, what is done when two unkown cats want to meet, its best to seperate them in rooms. one is inside a room while the otherone is outside, they will fuss and figure out who is boss.
I have two cats. they are the coolest cats you will ever meet. the male hisses but he doesnt get along with the neighbor cats when he is outside on the lawn. one time the neighbor's male cat chased my male cat up my stairs and hissed. I was right there to stop it yet it was a scary situation.
