Both of my parents are also gone and my mother passed away in Jan 07 she was an raging and I mean raging alcoholic. Like you I had detached from her many years earlier. I was convinced that the only way I could keep the commandment to honor thy father and thy mother was to put miles between she and I and so thats what I did. When I found out about her passing it didn't surprise me or my siblings...we all knew but it was still a very sad time and I do miss the mom I had once long long ago. The one that she was before the alcohol came and took her away.
Hang in there hunny.

You have my prayers. I lost my mother to alcohol too. It is a hard loss.
Grief takes time. Talk to friends and relatives you trust. It really helps. It may be difficult to bring up the topic of alcoholism, but it is still very helpful to have someone listen. Someday you will have strong happy memories of your mom, and the sad memories will lose their awfulness.
