A Test with AF
 

We discussed this earlier but it's still lingering... apparently my alcohol and drug addicted friend that I've been trying to stay away from is doing pretty bad, I heard this from a mutual friend. His dad is probably dying. :(

I want to reach out and express my compassion and sympathy, but I find myself wanting to add "let me know if there's anything I can do." This is where I get uncomfortable---

Because I know the answer to that would be to go sit all night in bars with him again, be his "drinking buddy" get sucked back in, and I don't want that, I've come too far.

You could reach out to your friend with a card that includes a personal message about how much you care. You don't have to make any offers of help unless you are comfortable with doing so.

Sometimes you have to save yourself.

I agree with Barbara but ultimately you have to do what you feel is best for you.
