I want to thank you all for being there for me last night.
It is much more peaceful today, as AH got up, made a few phone calls and left without saying a word.
I'm looking forward to the time when I am no longer entangled.

Interesting discussion! It reminds me of a situation I was in last winter when my ABF was still in the depths of his addiction. He "went out for a walk" in weather well below 0 Farenheit and was gone for a long time. I was supposed to be going out but I figured he might have walked to the nearest bar. I was new to Alanon and learning about enabling. First I was going to just go out myself and not worry but after a lot of soul searching I decided instead to drive to the bar to look for him. Yes, he was there and pretty drunk. I offered him a ride home without any dramatic accusations and he came with me. I know it was enabling but if he had passed out in a snowbank and frozen to death I would have never forgive myself.

I think whether you help in such a situation depends on the situation and how much potential danger they are in.
