Songs with meaning

Stay by Sugarland....in my case the other woman is the bottle.

"Stay"

I've been sitting here staring at the clock on the wall
And I've been laying here praying, praying she won't call
It's just another call from home
And you'll get it and be gone
And I'll be crying

And I'll be begging you, baby
Beg you not to leave
But I'll be left here waiting
With my Heart on my sleeve
Oh, for the next time we'll be here
Seems like a million years
And I think I'm dying

What do I have to do to make you see
She can't love you like me?

Why don't you stay
I'm down on my knees
I'm so tired of being lonely
Don't I give you what you need
When she calls you to go
There is one thing you should know
We don't have to live this way
Baby, why don't you stay

You keep telling me, baby
There will come a time
When you will leave her arms
And forever be in mine
But I don't think that's the truth
And I don't like being used and I'm tired of waiting
It's too much pain to have to bear
To love a man you have to share

Why don't you stay
I'm down on my knees
I'm so tired of being lonely
Don't I give you what you need
When she calls you to go
There is one thing you should know
We don't have to live this way
Baby, why don't you stay

I can't take it any longer
But my will is getting stronger
And I think I know just what I have to do
I can't waste another minute
After all that I've put in it
I've given you my best
Why does she get the best of you
So next time you find you wanna leave her bed for mine

Why don't you stay
I'm up off my knees
I'm so tired of being lonely
You can't give me what I need
When she begs you not to go
There is one thing you should know
I don't have to live this way
Baby, why don't you stay, yeah

Found another....

Joey-Concrete Blonde

Joey, baby - don't get crazy
Detours. Fences... I get defensive
I know you've heard it all before -
so I don't say it anymore
I just stand by and let you
fight your secret war.
And though I used to wonder why -
I used to cry till I was dry.
Still sometimes I get a strange pain
inside
Oh, Joey, if you're hurting so am I.

Joey, honey - I've got the money
All is forgiven. Listen, listen
And if I seem to be confused
I didn't mean to be with you.
And when you said I scared you,
well I guess you scared me too.
But we got lucky once before
And I don't wanna close the door
And if you're somewhere out there
passed out on the floor.
Oh Joey, I'm not angry anymore.

Seems like Joey is my husband...

What You Are (Audioslave)

(This song was written about recovery from alcohol addiction, but as usual smells alot like codependency).

And when you wanted me
I came to you
And when you wanted someone else
I withdrew
And when you asked for light
I set myself on fire
And if I go far away I know
You'll find another slave

(chorus)
Cause now I'm free from what you want
Now I'm free from what you need
Now I'm free from what you are

And when you wanted blood
I cut my veins
And when you wanted love
I bled myself again
Now that I've had my fill of you
I'll give you up forever
And here I go far away
I know you'll find another slave

(chorus)
Cause now I'm free from what you want
Now I'm free from what you need
Now I'm free from what you are

Then a vision came to me
When you came along
I gave you everything
But then you wanted more

Sometimes I misunderstand lyrics, but I think I get the gist of "Stay." I listened to it once - exactly - on the radio and said "I don't THINK so!" If he wants her more than me, if he believes that she loves him more, "suit yourself!" I say. I'll find someone I don't have to beg to stay, or I'll live quite happily on my own.

Here, here! I never really noticed how needy and codependent a lot of popular songs are until I started recovery. Or how many of them I used to buy in to, lol. Here is one of my favorites now.

You Had Me - Joss Stone

You had me
You lost me
You're wasted
You cost me
I don't want you here messing with my mind

Spitting in my eyes and I still see
Tried to keep me down
I'm breaking free
I don't want no part in your next fix
Someone needs to tell you this is it

Hey listen you'll be missin'
Out on all my love and my kissing
Make your mistakes on your own time
When you come down you're just no good to have around
Instead of making money you took mine

[Chorus]
You had me
You lost me
You're wasted
You cost me
I don't want you here messing with my mind
I've realized in time
that my eyes are not blind
I've seen it before
I'm taking back my life

You tried to trade on my naivete
But the things you do and say embarrass me
See once upon a time I was your fool
But the one I leave behind is you

Hey listen you'll be missin'
Out on all my love and my kissing
Make your mistakes on your own time
When you come down you're just no good to have around
Instead of making money you took mine

[Chorus]

Vodka and a packet of cigarettes
That's all it used to be but now
You're sniffing on snow when you're feeling low
Suffocating dreams that could have been
Maybe for a minute I was down with that
But it didn't take long for me to see the light
You swore you had control of it
But when I stepped back you slipped on your supply

[Chorus]

Taking it back I'm taking it back
Taking back my life
Taking it back I'm taking it back
Taking back my life
Ain't nobody got no business stressing all the time
Taking it back I'm taking it back
Taking back my life

[Chorus]

Taking it back I'm taking it back
Taking back my life
Taking it back I'm taking it back
Taking back my life
Ain't nobody got no business stressing all the time
Taking it back I'm taking it back
Taking back my life

I still say the ultimate recovery song for me, chock packed full of slogans, etc. to get you through the day and get your mindset back to being on yourself is Big Girls Don't Cry by Fergie. I listen to that song all the time for serenity. Check out the lyrics.

i posted on another thread about the song "Stay" - I related the same as you loverof1 - to me the "her" is addiction.

In the beginning, I did beg, plead, pray and ask him to choose me over that addiction - today I know his addiction has nothing to me - but if he is unable to stay away - stay clean then . . .

I can't take it any longer
But my will is getting stronger
And I think I know just what I have to do
I can't waste another minute
After all that I've put in it
I've given you my best
Why does she get the best of you
So next time you find you wanna leave her bed for mine

Why don't you stay
I'm up off my knees
I'm so tired of being lonely
You can't give me what I need
When she begs you not to go
There is one thing you should know
I don't have to live this way
Baby, why don't you stay, yeah

I guess I missed that last part. Sorry if I came off judgemental in that last post. It just ticks me off how we are bombarded with unhealthy messages from every facet of society. The so-called Entertainment Industry being one of the biggest offenders, IMO. I mean, it's just no wonder there are so many codependents like me around with all the songs, movies, tv shows, commercials, etc. sending messages that I need another to make me whole, love conquers all, etc. etc.

*stepping down off my soap box, now* *rant over*

Oh I totally agree. I think had my childhood been perfect, I still would have ended up a codie. I always had my ear to the radio, especially with love songs, and movies and books with the same messages.

Quite frankly, I truly believed that's what love was supposed to be like...so many people wrote it as so!

I view all those songs, movies, etc. 'much' differently now! Now when I hear them I always think, man, have I got a good book or two for you to read, LOL!!!

This is mine,

MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE LYRICS

"It's Not A Fashion Statement, It's A Deathwish"

For what you did to me,
and what I'll do to you,
you get, what everyone else gets,
you get a lifetime

Let's go!

Do you remember that day when we met
you told me this gets harder
well it did
been holding on forever,
promise me that when I'm gone you'll kill my enemies,
the damage you've inflicted, temporary wounds
I'm coming back from the dead and I'll take you home with me
I'm taking back the life you stole

We never got that far,
this helps me to think all through the night
bright lights that won't kill me now, or tell me how
just you and I, your starless eyes remain.

Hip Hip Hooray for me, you talk to me, but would you kill me in my sleep
lay still like the dead
from the razor to the rosary
we could lose ourselves
and paint these walls in pitchfork red

I will avenge my ghost with every breath I take
I'm coming back from the dead and I'll take you home with me
I'm taking back the life you stole

This hole you put me in
wasn't deep enough
and I'm climbing out right now
you're running out of places to hide from me
when you go
just know that I will remember you
if living was the hardest part
we'll then one day be together
and in the end we'll fall apart
just like the leaves change in colors
and then I will be with you
I will be there one last time now

when you go
just know that I will remember you

I lost my fear of falling
I will be with you
I will be with you

Another good one (courtesy my daughter again) My favorite part in this one is where they scream "GO FIX YOURSELF!!!"

"Scars" (BY Papa Roach)

I tear my heart open, I sew myself shut
My weakness is that I care too much
And my scars remind me that the past is real
I tear my heart open just to feel

Drunk and I'm feeling down
And I just wanna be alone
I'm pissed cause you came around
Why don't you just go home
Cause you channel all your pain
And I can't help you fix yourself
You're making me insane
All I can say is

[Chorus:]
I tear my heart open, I sew myself shut
My weakness is that I care too much
And our scars remind us that the past is real
I tear my heart open just to feel

I tried to help you once
Against my own advice
I saw you going down
But you never realized
That you're drowning in the water
So I offered you my hand
Compassions in my nature
Tonight is our last stand

[Chorus]

I'm drunk and I'm feeling down
And I just wanna be alone
You shouldn't ever come around
Why don't you just go home?
Cause you're drowning in the water
And I tried to grab your hand
And I left my heart open
But you didn't understand
But you didn't understand
Go fix yourself

I can't help you fix yourself
But at least I can say I tried
I'm sorry but I gotta move on with my own life
I can't help you fix yourself
But at least I can say I tried
I'm sorry but I gotta move on with my own life

You're not Judgmental! YOU ARE ACCURATE! It is true. Movies, TV Shows, Commercials give off the message that there is someone out there, your soul mate who "completes" you. I always bought into it and believed love would conquer all. And furthermore real love must hurt, and come with great emotion and angst, you'd die for this person, you'd drink their bathwater, you'd walk 500 hundred miles, every night is new years eve, everytime you make love it's like the first, etc etc....

Without that person, I guess if I use the media as my guide I must be "incomplete" .

We were all listening to the same songs. Should have paid more attention to this one by Pink Floyd.

One Slip
A restless eye across a weary room
A glazed look and I was on the road to ruin
The music played and played as we whirled without end
No hint, no word her honour to defend

I will, I will she sighed to my request
And then she tossed her mane while my resolve was put to the test
Then drowned in desire, our souls on fire
I led the way to the funeral pyre
And without a thought of the consequence
I gave in to my decadence

One slip, and down the hole we fall,
It seems to take no time at all
A momentary lapse of reason
That binds a life for life
A small regret, you won't forget
There'll be no sleep in here tonight

Was it love or was it the idea of being in love?
Of was it the hand of fate, that seemed to fit just like a glove?
The moment slipped by and soon the seeds were sown
The year grew late and neither one wanted to remain alone

One slip, and down the hole We fall,
It seems to take no time At all
A momentary lapse of reason
That binds a life to a life
The one regret, you will never forget,
There'll be no sleep in here tonight
One slip... one slip...

Guess this is written from an A's standpoint to his codie ex-lover...?

I love it...though it makes me cry, for I was the A at one point and am now a codie...

Hate Me by Blue October

I have to block out thoughts of you so I don’t lose my head
They crawl in like a cockroach leaving babies in my bed
Dropping little reels of tape to remind me that I’m alone
Playing movies in my head that make a porno feel like home
There's a burning in my pride, a nervous bleeding in my brain
An ounce of peace is all I want for you. Will you never call again?
And will you never say that you loved me just to put it in my face?
And will you never try to reach me? It is I that wanted space

Hate me today
Hate me tomorrow
Hate me for all the things I didn’t do for you

Hate me in ways
Yeah ways hard to swallow
Hate me so you can finally see what’s good for you

I’m sober now for 3 whole months it’s one accomplishment that you helped me with
The one thing that always tore us apart is the one thing I won’t touch again
In my sick way I want to thank you for holding my head up late at night
While I was busy waging wars on myself, you were trying to stop the fight
You never doubted my warped opinions on things like suicidal hate
You made me compliment myself when it was way too hard to take
So I’ll drive so ******* far away that I never cross your mind
And do whatever it takes in your heart to leave me behind

Hate me today
Hate me tomorrow
Hate me for all the things I didn’t do for you

Hate me in ways
Yeah ways hard to swallow
Hate me so you can finally see what’s good for you

And with a sad heart I say bye to you and wave
Kicking shadows on the street for every mistake that I had made
And like a baby boy I never was a man
Until I saw your blue eyes cry and I held your face in my hand
And then I fell down yelling “Make it go away!”
Just make a smile come back and shine just like it used to be
And then she whispered “How can you do this to me?”

Hate me today
Hate me tomorrow
Hate me for all the things I didn’t do for you

Hate me in ways
Yeah ways hard to swallow
Hate me so you can finally see what’s good for you
For you
For you
For you

A long time ago someone here posted the song "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls, I thought that was a good choice, also "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd.

There’s a grand old punk band called X, who have a song called “Drunk in my Past” and I think that about sums it up for me:

Its the drunk in my past shuffling by like a train
sounds on it's track like a ride like a ride that don't last
swears each drink is the last
tells the same lie each night
and breaks every promise
til she makes me go crazy
she's gonna drive me to drinking
there's a drunk in my past
the one who let me down
who wasn't around when needed
there's a drunk in my past
who swears each drink is the last
thought i give me another chance
there's a dunk in my path
each i go past my house while trying to find my way home
my door way is blocked by doomsday for certain
if your own key don't fit you know it's curtains
oh well
never a dull moment never a moment passes
when someone dull don't pass me by
i love her like a sister that drunk that girl
why i wish her all the best
that's all that's left cause she took the rest
one heck of a past

YouTube - X - Drunk In My Past

Wow. I haven’t listened to this in years and it brings back memories…so glad I don’t “live” there anymore!

Be Like the Sea by Cathie Ryan. Music by Cathie Ryan and John Doyle

It matters nothing what they did to you
The storm is over, the wreckage through
Leave them in your wake, no more for you to take
Be like the sea

If it hurts your heart cast it up on the shore
Let it go forever ceart go lear (right enough)
Wash away the sorrow, the tears of no tomorrow
Be like the sea

The sea, the sea, dive with me
We'll lose these rags we're wearing and be
Like the sea, the sea, wild and free
We'll swim out past the longing so deep

Down below these waves, in the deepest depth
There are echoes sounding true as your breath
The still small voice in you, the endless open blue
Be like the sea

Go on forever and shine out in the sun
the full a ta se everyone (it is)
Dance yourself around, give up the small ground
Be like the sea

The sea, the sea, dive with me
We'll lose these rags we're wearing and be
Like the sea, the sea, wild and free
We'll swim out past the longing so deep
