If the Twelve Steps Aren't Right for You Consider Writing Your Own

Here's a glimpse of my personalized 12-step plan of action:

1. Decide how I want to live my life
2. Let go of fears and behaviors that are keeping me stuck
3. Stop dwelling on the negatives and start focusing on the possible
4. Cultivate relationships that are based on the truth
5. Become self-reliant
6. Seek positive solutions to life's challenges
7. Do what is right, rather than what is easy
8. Make careful decisions
9. Find the courage to say what I think and feel
10. Stop worrying about what other people think of me
11. Stop trying to please others and focus on pleasing myself
12. Achieve financial independence

9 and 10 are difficult ones I am focusing most of my efforts on right now - but are so much easier now than before I began my recovery.

FD, that is a great set of goals/steps. It matches what I've been thinking to a great extent without my having thought to put it into words that way.

here are my *old* 12 steps I used to live by:

1. find a drunk will always love me...no matter how badly he makes me feel.

Thats it! Why have 11 more when ya found yourself #1!

Great thread, Jill.

I like your list...I'm going to work on one just like it...I just can't get into the 12 Steps (at this point in my life, maybe I will soon) for some reason. Thanks for the idea!
