This page: http://www.hbo.com/addiction/underst...oday_poll.html
was extremely interesting, from a poll they did. Polled from the friends/family of addicted person...."our" side. The results are not very encouraging....but this struck me like a neon sign (maybe because I thought some were saying something quite contrary to this in another post)
Makes me think anyways.....thanks.

Family support/ pressure was most often cited as the primary reason the family member was able to overcome addiction.

For the poll...there is another page for complete results. It lists actual percentages for each answer....I think it was more telling than their statements.
Right behind family support, with only a few points less, was Willpower/self-determination for getting clean. Still very interesting.

I haven't had the time to look at it yet but thank you for the link Sunflower.
Sometimes support given from family & friends feels like pressure or nagging to an addict. Even if it's not.
I say that from experience, as an addict.

As a recovering alcoholic, that poll really concerns me. They are only propagating two of the biggest myths about alcoholism.
One - That an alcoholic will stop because someone wants them to. Read the Big Book
Two- Will power. Alcoholics have will power in spades. Just not when it comes to drinking. From that same paragraph
A power greater than myself is not my will power.

Frothy emotional appeal seldom suffices. The message which can interest and hold these alcoholic people must have depth and weight.
In nearly all cases, their ideals must be grounded in a power greater than themselves, if they are to re-create their lives.
