I'm an alcoholic in recovery, and I love cooking. Naturally I come across recipes that call for beer or wine.

Simple for me. Nope, I can't cook with alcohol, even assuming that the alcohol burns off. It's a trigger for me. If I have to I'll use an N/A beer or wine even though they still contain traces of alcohol, but better yet I'll find a broth or something else to substitute.

I would say it's best not to. Hey, one of my favorite cookbooks is by the Coors Brewery, and there's not a single recipe in there that doesn't taste just as good without the alcohol.

I used to spend my weekend afternoons in the kitchen cooking and drinking until I couldn't talk or walk straight. It's funny how the food tastes so much better now that I'm sober and coherent. Duh!

Mec, are they in recovery?
If not and still drinking, I would say carry on. Otherwise, I wouldnt personaly cook with it. Have you two discussed what his feelings on the issue is?

I wouldn't...even though the alcohol DOES burn off...like Astro said, it can be a trigger. One of my favorite desserts to make calls for a wine sauce, but I've just found other ways of making a similar sauce for it.

I've found that the slightest things can trigger a potential relapse in A's that are in recovery, and in this case the slightest taste of beer, wine, or even if she sees you cooking with it, could trigger her.

I have a recovering AGF too, and even though she tells me it's okay, I avoid having alcohol around her in any fashion at all times - I'm not an A, but I don't need alcohol in my life to be happy. She's what makes me happy, and for that, I'd subsitute anything I could in a recipe for beer and wine just to ensure I don't do anything that could cause a trigger.

i'm feeling very non-compliant today. how many times do we think the active alcoholic worries about something they might do that may not be in our best interests? all together now.....raise your hands.

i would fix it the way i wanted, and get him a mickey d's gift certificate.

ok....the nice me would say....don't cook with alcohol for the alcoholic. if they are in recovery, it would not be a good idea at all. even if it is supposed to burn off.....it does not entirely burn off.

i would not want to be a contributing factor to a relapse...............

ah, i 'm babbling. they have choices, right? if you cook it with alcohol, tell them. that is where your responsibility ends.

if they are drinking still, hey, they will love your dish.

now, please totally disregard everything i have just posted, for i am not in a good mood today.

Whether Embraced is in a good mood or not, she is totally right.

There are some desserts like rum cake that are just straight alcohol soaked in, not cooked.....that might be a huge mistake, but like E said, tell them it's full of it and what they decide to do after that is their problem.

Also, for A's who have to test, even with the alcohol burning off, it can still raise their ETG levels to "dirty" which is a nightmare to explain...

Jeri, I just _love_ your sense of humor, even when you're in a bad mood

Hi.

I thought it burnt off. I think it does, but if your info is

current ...err on the safe side. Once when I was

struggling, and on day 2 or 3 again..back way when..

the urge and physical craving overcame and I drank a

bottle of cooking wine. Yuck! Blew up like a blowfish

( high sodium).

This reminds me, when I was sober years ago, my son

was 9 years old and we took a holiday to a larger city

and had a sit down dinner at Olive Garden.

When the server described the salad, lush greens with

red wine vinagrette...Chris said politely....."Excuse

me lady, but my Mom can't have the salad, she's a

alcoholic"! I chose the ranch.

Love,

Sherry
