SR's founder, Jon

Does anyone know where the thread is about the story of SR, how it came to be and Jon, who started it? I remember seeing it about a year ago but can't find it now. I think there were a couple threads on the subject. Can anyone find the thread(s)? I'd be grateful.

Thanks Dee! Just thinking back over when I joined here. For the life of me, I couldn't remember Jon's last name.

I know when I joined, over 18 years ago (this place saved my life and continues to make it more beautiful every day), there were a handful of members and posts and threads grew each week. I remember when we hit "1000" members, we celebrated. Today there are over 180,000 and we still grow. When we hit over a million posts, I knew this place was magic, and was doing for others what it had done for me.

I heard from Jon sometimes, over the years although it's been a while, just checking with me as a friend, and last heard he was happy and continuing to grow in recovery and in his computer business, often they were one and the same. I still think of something he told me once, when I was in codependent chaos over my addicted son and kept trying to "help" out of love. Jon said "You just may love him right into the grave" meaning that I was enabling and doing more harm than good. That jolted me into reality and is something I never forget. That's how Jon was, straight shooter right from his heart of gold.

Today's count....

Thanks Least, for starting this thread. It's good for new members to know a little about how it all started...and to be part of the magic that keeps it growing each day. And good for old members like me to remember our "roots".

I'm so grateful to Jon - for I've met some of the most wonderful people through SR. People who have touched my heart, helped me grow - and changed me forever. Just so happens, 3 of them have posted on this thread.

Question Jon's Here?

Well, yes. Yes I am here. For the first time in many years...

I was going over in my head when SoberRecovery's 20th anniversary would be. As it turns out, SR will turn 20 years-old in September of this year. I was still a few years away from 40 when we launched SR... I'll be 60 in just two more years.

Wow.

I just read that since it's launch, there have been just under 6,500,000 posts from about 185,000 members in the SR Forums. That's over 320,000 posts a year. Don't forget that in 1999/2000 there was no Facebook. No Twitter. No iPhones or Androids. The leading Internet providers were Netscape, AOL and Earthlink. It was the Online Wild West, literally, We had no budget (because you have to actually have some money to budget), no employees, no offices... But we made it work, and SR grew.

I think the most important thing I could ever say about this amazing occasion at this amazing place is that in many ways SR succeeded in spite of me rather than because of me. The real reason this beautiful piece of software will turn 20 is the team of volunteers that nursed, built and maintained the site through our baby steps, personal struggles and our share of disasters. The success of this community has always been due to the Admins and Mods and Greeters who threw caution to the wind and bought into my idea of a shared space where anyone, anywhere and at anytime could find someone to talk to, to find resources, to get help.

My thanks and gratitude go out to each and everyone of you, but especially the team that made (and continue to make) SR a safe, healthy and healing place.

Be well, stay safe, and Happy Happy 20th SoberRecovery!

Jon

Jon - how wonderful to hear from you. You've impacted so many lives with your vision. If there was no SR I'd likely not be sitting here typing away - probably downing my 10th drink of the evening. Thank you for helping to save me.
But really - thank you can't begin to cover it! This place has been the miracle I needed.

Jon who?

^^^^

Jon, you used to do that a lot and I couldn't resist. *snork*

It's so darn good to see you here. I hope you have some smidgen of an idea of what a great thing you built here.

Don't be a stranger, there are people here who never met you and need to hear your story...from you.

Love you lots, you probably saved my life...and that of my son (who sadly is still struggling and we no longer connect). At least one of us learned to find a better life. He will find his own way.

Hugs and Hugs

Jon! I never knew you but felt like I did, in a way, just from being a member here. I can't thank you enough for starting SR. This place saved my life and my sanity. Glad you came back! Come by more often, don't be a stranger.

A big thank you to Jon, the founder of this site. My first experience of this site was in 2010 - a whole decade ago - which I now learn is barely half of the time the site has been operational.

Sending a huge Thank you Jon and of course all those
instrumental in keeping SR alive. My join date was in 2005
and have going thru many personal changes as well in my
own life, plus achieving continuous sobriety and recovery
for almost 30 yrs come this August 11th.

SR has become an awesome recovery lifeline that I use in
my daily life sharing my own experiences, strengths and hopes
with others just like me.

Your presence here is absolutely appreciated. Thank You....!!!!

Jon, it was your vision that brought to where we are today. I was lucky enough to know you back in the day. I still remember words you said to me one day when I was feeling so down. I hung onto those words.

We often refer to this place as 'the house that jon built'.

It was your kindness and compassion that led us on the right path to helping each other along in this journey.

I am so happy to see you here and thank s so much for taking the time to stop in as our 20th anniversary approaches.
