Sorry if it was discussed previously, but does anybody have experience with intermittent fasting? I've lost 55 pounds and am at the point where I want to lose a little more upper body fat and gain muscle all around. I'm 51 and want to get lean and mean!

JCNY, I can't help you with your question as I've never gone that route. On an unrelated note, I lived in Syosset from 1966 to 1973 so I have some LI blood in me.

Catching up since my last post:

On Friday I went to the gym to take my frustration about some potentially disturbing news from my kidney specialist. Me: 1 Weights: 0

Yesterday we were at the gym in the morning and considering how I was feeling had a much better workout than anticipated. In the afternoon we took our dog on a walk of a few miles.

This morning I had a solid workout. Five rounds of:

Standing Kb rows
Kb reverse lunges
Kb snatches with a squat
Pushups
Mountain climbers
Planks with alternating hip touches.

Hadn't been to the gym in three days, so I went after work today for an hour.

Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend!

Just turned 51 myself JCNY. Welcome.

I have no experience with intermittent fasting. Congrats on losing that 55.... a nice accomplishment indeed.

Hi purps....a nice weekend so far here. The humidity has eased a little and that's always welcome relief. Looking ahead, next weekend looks to be a winner too. Good on you getting back to the gym.

GC, I'm sorry you've got the kidney results looming over you. Something like that would rattle my cage a bit too. I make a rather poor patient. Way to go on the continued workouts.

I've postponed my scheduled exam at the neurospine place until after year end. Being self employed I've a rather large deductible on my health insurance. It's my understanding that the doc would likely need to do various imaging and I'd rather do that expensive stuff (meet my deductible) earlier in the year. I've been doing lots of ham string stretches and others targeting sciatica and have noticed marked improvement.

I've enjoyed copious amounts of caramel cake for my birthday, so today was a nice 5k run and some trap work. Will be at the gym tomorrow morning too. Weights.

Mark, it appears that we both have some medical issues lingering over our heads.

Holiday or no holiday, I had my usual Monday session with my trainer. After warmups I did three rounds of:

Incline Db chest presses
Incline chest flyes
Incline Bb skull crushers
Planks
Leg raises
Ab wheel rollouts

I'm hoping to go on a nice walk with my wife and dog this afternoon.

Hey Gonnachange, I work right by Syosset. Some have said that they've lost more fat and while gaining muscle with intermittent fasting. I'm trying it with 16 hours of no food per day. So I eat the normal amount of calories from about 10:30-5:30. I find it fine as I'm not usually too hungry in the morning anyway.

I'm working with a personal trainer and I really want to tone & build muscle, especially my upper body. Basically I want a beach body which is going to take some time.

JCNY, when you're not fasting what type diet has worked best for you? Sounds like you're on the right path to get that beach body you're after! A large part of my training is for aesthetics as well. As much effort as it took to crawl out of my beer hole, I darn well want to look good and healthy outwardly as well......even at 51 .Others here work with trainers too but I never have.

GC, hope you got that afternoon walk in with Mrs. GC and the pup. I imagine it's beginning to feel nice outside way up there.

This morning's gym session was a favorite....good ole bi's and tri's. Gotta love that pump. This afternoon was a 2.5 mile run.

I hope everyone's long weekend is wrapping up nicely.

Hey Mark. Well intermittent fast or not, I have generally followed paleo and added some healthy carbs. My thing is not to be on a diet per say, but just eat a healthy "diet."

Paelo basics - Eat: Meat, fish, eggs, vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, herbs, spices, healthy fats and oils.

Avoid: Processed foods, sugar, soft drinks, grains, most dairy products, legumes, artificial sweeteners, vegetable oils, margarine and trans fats.

I changed my exercise plans yesterday and went in the afternoon so that I could channel my inner Mark and be there again by 6 this morning. Lots of high rep low weight exercises that was followed by high intensity interval cardio work. I was pretty gassed, but it was fine way to start the day.

Ah that's a good one GC! .......because, ironically, I slept in this morning. I'll wrap up my work schedule unusually early today and get in an afternoon workout. Quite a departure from my usual predawn sessions.

A nice coolish front has passed through and the reprieve from wretched humidity has me energized and feeling good. Watch out weights! I'm coming for ya!

Well, I haven't been to the gym since Sunday, but I danced for two hours at the Green Day concert last night ~ does that count? (I stayed sober too! )

Hey guys! So I've been being slacking off of exercise for the last 2 weeks..... lots of excuses and procrastination. But no more! Gotta keep that motivation going if I want to get my body to where I want it to be. I was doing some tae-bo for awhile but I think I'm going to do another round of P90X3. It's only half an hour so there's really no reason why I can't find a half hour a day to work out.

Good to be back!

How's everybody doing?

JNCY I do intermittent fasting most days. I don't eat until around 1pm. I get up at 4am for work and only have coffee and water until I get home. Then I eat some oatmeal with fruit in it. I have recently gone vegetarian so for dinner I have a stir fry with tofu and veggies or a salad or a falafel or a veggie burger. I feel great having given up meat, my digestion is amazing and I feel generally lighter. I have lots of energy. I still have some chocolate most days, but hey we all have at least one vice lol.

Zen, I get up at 4am for work too but am hungry by 10. About what time is your last meal? I drink water and coffee with a little half and half, but should try black.

Yes, Purpl dancing counts.

My exercise for the day is going to be walking, pushups, and planks.

JNCY, I also have cream in my coffee so I guess it's a bit of a cheat with the fasting...... I eat dinner around 6 and don't eat anything after. Sometimes I eat before 1, it depends on when I get home, I don't always work 8 hours so sometimes I'm home at 11. I don't have any hard rules about it and I'm ALWAYS hungry by the time I eat. Today I was home at 11 and ate right away.

Workout done for today!

Hi gang and nice to see you back Zen.

Yesterday was fun because I had enough time for a whole body workout. It took a while but was a nice change. Today is a rest day with tonight bringing a junior varsity football game at my daughter's school. She's on the dance team so I go watch her do her thing. I tell her she got all her 'moves' from me and she just rolls her eyes.

Not working tomorrow so a nice long workout is on the agenda. And likely a run too. With a high altitude hiking trip coming up I need to build stamina.

Happy weekend everyone (well almost).

Mark, a teenager rolling his or her eyes at their father? I've never heard of such a thing, okay maybe once, but certainly never in my household. LOL! Enjoy your day off and I hope you kicked butt at the gym and on the road. Where are you going hiking?

Exercise today has been much like yesterday, walking, pushups, and planks. I'll be moving some iron tomorrow.

No workout today. My butt is so sore from yesterdays workout that I'm having a hard time getting up and sitting down haha.

Going to see IT tonight. I heard that the clown was so scary that the children actors were so frightened that they were crying during the filming. I can't wait!

Enjoy that movie Zen. No horror movies for me.

I keep forgetting to add planks to my regular ab stuff. I'll be at the gym door when it opens tomorrow to move a bit of iron myself.

GC, I leave on the 20th for 4 days of hiking in Northern New Mexico. The flight is to Albuquerque but my home base will be Taos. I want to do one desert-ish hike and one will be as far as I can make it up the Wheeler Peak trail, which is a high altitude. I should get to see the aspens turning some where along the way. The cold may be an issue up so far, but I'll keep going as long as it's fun, The other couple of days I'll fill in after talking to the locals. Oh, and I'm considering a hot air balloon ride. That would be new for me.

Best of weekends to everyone.
