Hey Heaters,

Just got back from dinner with some friends. They meet every Wednesday night for dinner and have recently started inviting us. Since one of my 2014 goals is to Re-enter the world of socializing, I'm saying yes to the invitations, even though sometimes I feel like cocooning at home and want to say no. They're not really into healthy eating much, so next week when I start my Whole30, I may have to pass. They're talking about eating Mexican food next week, and not only do I dislike it, there is not a single thing Paleo about Mexican food.

Today my food consisted of meat....an egg....a green smoothie....a little more meat.....and oysters au gratin for dinner.....Oh, and a salad. ..... I've just ordered something called Tanka Bars from Amazon. It's buffalo meat stuffed with cranberries. Sounds interesting!

Hi everyone,

Thought I'd just update you all. Decided four days ago that enough was enough and I need to get back on track with my diet and drinking. (Been drinking wine in moderation but its beginning to become a habit again).

So to begin with, I've cut all alcohol out of my diet and I'm drinking one smoothie a day containing ground flaxseed, almond unsweetened milk and fruit; one vegetable juice a day and a dinner that consists of a lean piece of fish or chicken and vegetables and salad. No carbs, no dairy, no red meat.

After only four days I feel GREAT! Don't know whether its the multi vitamin that I'm now taking or the change in diet. In particular, the biggest change has been my mood. Just thinking - I'm not feeling down......my usual state of mind. I've also lost 4 lbs!

In a couple of days I will gradually add more calories to my diet, but I hope to maintain a very healthy diet.

I love this site, great ideas, lots of enthusiasm and lots of support. Thanks guys!

Sounds great dragon...congrats!

If it makes you feel better LDT (it won't), I love Mexican and am skipping it now for my challenge too.

Hang in there AG. I'll be curious to know your strategy.

InP - I don't remember you worrying too much about weight?

So day 6 of my self imposed Paleo eating challenge is about done. No slips, no close calls, some minor temptation but nothing close to cheating. I had sausage, eggs and veggies. A salad later in the day. Going to make a big azz bowl of raw ice cream in a bit.

I saw an article earlier today, that they stopped feeding monkeys bananas in the UK. The new bananas have too much sugar and calories and its rotting their teeth and giving them symptoms similar to diabetes. I eat about 2-3 a day (bananas, not monkeys) on average and will keep them in for now.

Uh oh. I eat about 2 a day two, although only organic. Did they say anything about organic? Not my precious bananas!
Uhh, yeah I worry about weight. I'm frustrated because I've been working out a lot more regularly the last couple of months and trying really hard to be moderate with my diet and am STILL THE SAME WEIGHT. Thanks Gilmer for your bright side--maybe that's even true! Because I've been doing resistance training. Yeah, that's it!
I get so annoyed at my stubborn body sometimes. I feel like it's like: "she's trying to lose weight!!! OMG stop herrrr!" Haha sorry for the rant just a little frustrated. Really it's OK, I'm a pretty healthy person just like to complain sometimes.

I LOVE Mexican food too. I make a killer fish taco. Authentic style. LDT I don't understand you.

Way to go Dragon on your efforts to be healthy, that's great and nice results!
AG keep us posted! What's your strategy now?
We're going to our friend's time share in Whistler this weekend---we bought BBQ ribs and cabbage rolls to bring up. OY good thing I have a long run and lots of swimming planned! But that's pretty paleo, right?

Yesterday's half portions day went well. Today it is liquids. I've got my three building blocks to good nutrition here at McD's: coffee, 1% milk, and OJ.

Yesterday I dreaded exercise, but went down and did it on schedule. I thought I'd be tired, but it went well for all thirty minutes. In a couple weeks I'll be maxed on the incline, and my choices for improvement will be either increase the time or increase the speed.

I can't walk faster--my legs are too short--and I hate running: my knees are too old, anyway. But I dread increasing the time. Thirty minutes is so boring as it is.

I will have to investigate and see if I can find music with a beat of 2.5 mph. I know "Bad to the Bone" by George Thorogood fits it. Maybe iTunes has special exercise music. I don't want it to sound like Muzak, though.

"LDT, I don't understand you"..... Gee, where have I heard that before?
Truthfully, I don't get it either, IP. My family is constantly on my case about it, too. My kids roll their eyes at me. My H tries to convince me that I'm wrong for not liking Mexican food. For the record.....Mexican food all tastes the same to me....It looks ugly and feels like a brick in my stomach that lasts for centuries. Disclaimer....I'm talking about Tex-Mex here.....The real stuff you get in real Mexico is acceptable. But I would drink a green smoothie made from the lawn clippings of my front lawn before grabbing that thing called a fajita.

4 days before my food challenge....No dairy ( goodbye my lovely cheese), legumes, wheat or sugar....not even honey.

Yesterday one of students came to their lesson and found my birthday present on my front porch. It came a little early . It was the coveted YOGA MAT I've been waiting for! . I sent my H a text with a picture of it, thanking him. He said " Oh...Dang...Well, surprise, then!"

Here's an all natural DIY cough syrup recipe:

1 Tbls. buckwheat or good local honey
1 Tbls. Apple cider vinegar
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger

Check out 'The Creek Line House' for the full recipe.

Had a sandwich today at this amazing Italian deli which makes some of the best sandwiches in the city. Artichoke, banana peppers, red peppers, eggplant, salad, turkey and provolone on focaccia, and grilled. It is my weakness.
But it was amazing!!!
I should do the whole 30 with you LDT. Sheesh.

^ That sounds AMAZING InP!

Day 7 wrapping up. One week ago I ate really bad...ridiculously bad...and decided...ENOUGH. My "cheats" were becoming more frequent. So, I decided to do a Paleo challenge starting the next day. I do have a few allowances in my challenge, but its still pretty strict.

A week later and zero cheats, and very few temptations. Peace of mind, and I don't sit there all day thinking about what bad to eat, then trying to talk myself out of it, then explaining why its ok...around and around. I stick to my allowed foods, and don't consider un-allowed foods. It feels like I have control back. I feel so much better than after a bad meal / snack and I love fasting.

I've got to fast tomorrow for morning and afternoon: nothing but water all day, till dinner. Not even coffee! That freaks me out.

Liquids day went well. Exercise was tough--I had to drop 1/10 of a mph, because I was just too beat to keep up. According to the lights on the treadmill, the difficulty level didn't drop, though, so I felt it was OK. I'm going to go a few days at this level and not push myself harder for awhile.

Today is a normal day.

Good Morning Heaters!

I've slowly been eliminating things from my house and pantry to get ready for my Paleo challenge on Monday.... I got up in the middle of the night to forage and......there was NADA to eat . Except almond butter.....so I ate a spoonful. I've been drinking the occasional cup of coffee WITHOUT milk or cream ( since I am eliminating dairy during the challenge ). I don't think eliminating all wheat will be Problem because I barely eat any anyway.....Grains? Well, not a big deal except for the rice in Sushi... I adore Sushi, but will just get this roll with cucumber wraps instead of rice.

I've been on several different sites, pouring over different recipes for the challenge and decided to simplify my life by eating mostly what's on Nom Nom Paleo, and this other Paleo recipe book I have. I will stick to just those 2.

InPar....I have been very confused as to what to call my challenge ( as Ghostly can attest to.....I've been bugging the hell out of him). I thought I was doing Whole30 by doing a strict Paleo challenge, but there ARE some differences.......One site I went to said the Whole30 was the Paleo30 challenge on crack..... ......So, whatever it's called, I start Monday. No wheat, grains, legumes, or dairy....period....and no cheats. If I don't last 30 days, y'all will be the first to know.

Meanwhile ......today is my birthday and I am eating CAKE!!

Ghostly-I'm really glad it's working for you.
Gilmer-it seems like you're on a diet plan-what is it? Make sure you don't conk yourself out if you're fasting and exercising, that can be dangerous!
LDT-I know all about the Whole 30, it's complicated as heck. Did you know that you can have coconut milk with your coffee? I was doing it, it tasted okay but hurt my throat so I had to stop.
Birthday cake! You go girl. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! 5

Mine is the eating plan from the Setting Captives Free website. I alternate with half-portions and liquids all day, then a normal meal for dinner. One day a week is a water fast till dinner, then there are two normal eating days. It's designed for slow but evident weight loss.

Gilmer-Huh. Well you seem to be sticking with it so good for you. I've never heard of it!
LDT-I did some "foraging" last night-I've been getting up in the nights a lot lately, a sign of a bigger problem I think, like STRESS-I had some grapes and a bit of chocolate at like 5:00 a.m. Oopsies.

I bought 3 kilos of satsumas yesterday , they are so yummy at the moment . I read about the chimps and bananas , i think the moderate way for a human is to have a banana rather than more processed sweet stuff , so i'm sticking with bananas . I don't deprive myself of anything that grows on trees or is above ground "ready to eat"

So yesterday 1 kg tangerines , 5 bananas , 3 pears and 400g of breaded white fish for dinner . 18 st weighed just before bed .

Might have bacon and scrambled or poached eggs for breakfast lots of satsumas and again fish for dinner .

Bestwishes, m

Organic?

I'm trying to work more organic into my diet. I learned this week that organic = no gmos!!

I'm trying to shift away from eating past 8 pm or so AND trying to eat more often and in smaller portions. All of these shifts seem to add up to me feeling better and having more energy.

PNP!

Yeah Mecanix...I don't think we need to ditch the banas just yet. I still have about 3-4 a day. They seem to be working well for you. One of the issues that article raised, is that bananas are so much different now, and full of sugar. That they bare no resemblance to the bananas that grow in the wild. This was not news to me. However, that it was so bad they stopped feeding them to guerillas was interesting. I'll wait to worry about that when I go so much else cleaned up. Even then, they may remain. I think your approach of eating anything that grows on tress or above ground is great!

Good plan PNP!

Day 8 about to conclude. I had a salad for dinner, and it was form a salad bar. One thing they had, which is a favorite of mine for this salad bar, is sweet potatoes mixed in with cranberries and pure organic maple syrup (just a bit). So I had some of that in my salad. Other than that mainly veggies, and for dressing olive oil and vinegar. I do not consider a bit of the maple syrup a cheat. I don't plan on having a lot of syrup, but if its just a bit that's on something in a salad bar...it fits in with my rules.

So day 8, no cheats. Some temptation, but nothing too bad.

I managed to hide myself upstairs studying all day, so I did managed to subsist on only water today. I did 15 minutes' worth of my exercise and was so unbearably bored I stopped. I'm going to get a shower, then my dad is taking me out for an early bird dinner. After that I'll finish the last 15 minutes.

Right this instant I'm going to look on iTunes for music to the beat.
