What do you think about when you exercise?

Just curious...what goes through your mind when you're engaging in your exercise of choice? For me, when I cycle, I noticed that I tend to think of the same things...

1.) various irksome situations going on at work and/or home, which tend to disappear the more I get into my "zone"

2.) "pedal...pedal...pedal....keep pedaling..."

3.) "drink water at the next flat stretch..."

4.) "keep going...you can do this....keep going....you can do this..."

5.) (at the top of a hill) "phew...got through that one"

6.) (when flying down a hill): "this is the best feeling in the world..."

7.) I hope I don't get hit by a car...

8.) I hope I don't fall off my bike...

9.) I can't do this...yes I can....there...I did it...

10.) double check posture, relax feet, breathe...

Lol I love it! I usually find some super aggressive music and try to put that out into my workout. Here's where it gets pathetic... I usually find myself thinking about my next cig when i am doing it.

I love running and going for a good long distance run. I usually think about what stuff is on my mind-good and bad and try and think most about all the good things going on. And, usually when I am running listening to great tunes, usually I come up with my most creative ideas.

So, when I run I think about stuff on my mind, work problems, how nice the weather is, and how glad I am to be out running.

I never run when thinking of bad stuff-its always a positive thing.

When i get really motivated, I start thinking about what kind of running event I would like to register for!

I run until I've figured out the ails of my world.

I think about everything....yet at the same time, not a darn thing.

I love being in the zone where you aren't even thinking....just enjoying it.

I love that too, coffee...for me, those are the most enjoyable times on my bike: when I tune in to my surroundings and completely forget everything else.

I loved your list! Last week, I was so deep in thought I walked 1/2 a mile before I realized how far I had gone.

I still managed to exercise at some level when I was drinking. I was filled with self loathing and would spend most of my time berating myself. Now, I think about how good I feel. How much gratitude I have for my sobriety and the many gifts being sober has brought to my life. If I am having a bad day, I still focus on gratitude because for the first time, in a long time, I have hope.

LOVE what Coffee said and have to agree with most of what you said, Faraway. Good question!

I wish I could turn my head off. It's a good day when I can get that Zen-like feeling of being one with the environment, listen to the sounds around me, smell those jasmine in bloom, and feel my own heart beating, wonderfully.

Always wondered if getting in "the zone" was tapping into something older and more primal, almost like instinct. Some folks claim humans can't tap into instincts like animals in the wild, but I wonder if we don't tap into the fringes, at least, when we're in a zen-like trance on longer runs sometimes.

Just a speculative and non-researched thought. lo

I "clark kent" it and picture someone I know being hurt and the only way to get to them is to complete whatever it is that I am doing. Whether I am rolling in jiujitsu or doing 50 push-ups, crazy, but hey it gets me through it.

When running...."gosh, David Boreanz is a hottie!" I watch Bones on the TM...its the only way I can make myself run.

Now in the pool...I am totally Zen...completely present in the moment...aware of the water sliding across my skin....sunlight in the water...the evenness of breath ..being suspended and completely free.

Not much... I must have my iPod, so I've got that going, and I check guys out. Mostly my trainer who is a Puerto Rican hottie and another trainer in particular, but guys in general. Every cardio machine at my gym has its own TV, which I don't actually watch, but I pretend to while I'm lookin' at dudes. I could never be a member of an all-female gym, although I do understand why some females take that route.

When I'm on a long run, sometimes I imagine that I'm in a race and that makes me want to run even harder. I don't really think about much in the gym, other than just random thoughts in my mind. It's actually my time not to think, to just be in the moment.
