You don't have to. You help them advertise every time you post. Keeps things fresh in google and other search engines, and well... it gets too complicated to get into.

Hi, I don't want to receive the newsletter via my email. I would still like to be able to read it though. Please tell me the news letter will also be posted on the forum for those who do not wish to have it sent to them.

Thanks

Thanks, Emily.

Thanks MorningGlory.

As members, a lot of us feel like we're in an uncomfortable position. We depend on and support the people who give and receive help from the forums, but we don't like to be used as part of a marketing strategy, and we don't feel safe combining the selves we've been here, often our most vulnerable selves, with the selves we maintain elsewhere in our lives.

I hope none of us will be pushed to a limit because of this problem. No one needs to act so rudely as to get banned or deleted, and I hope no one will go storming off. Believe me, I thought about it when the ads first encroached on my forum viewing screen.

A wise person on this forum told me that you have to ask yourself, are you helping and being helped more than you're harming and being harmed? Do the pros still outweigh the cons?

When they don't, for me, I will bow out gracefully. That doesn't mean fleeing; it means making some strategic and thoughtful posts that attempt to provoke thought among the membership about questions that are essential not just to physical recovery from abuse and abusive relationships, but to living as a sober person.

I think

I am not in an uproar about the newsletter: I've unchecked the e-mail preference box and I'll simply unsubscribe.

What bothers me is the random postings of "From the Community" on the front page. That makes me wish I had never posted anything here.

Having now seen a statement of the rights to our content that we give away when we post (my god I was such an innocent coming in), I have to ask:

Does the business that runs the forums own our PMs?

Please, will an administrator answer my question?

The "from the community" module on our homepage is just there to give potential new members a taste of the forum.

Content posted on SR, including PMs, belongs to SR. Please keep in mind, though, that creating a positive environment for sharing and supporting is very important to Internet Brands, and in the years that they have owned SR the nature of the peer-to-peer sharing on the forums hasn't been censored (other than asking that interactions adhere to the rules).

I commend SR for rethinking the newsletter, given the concerns -- very real ones -- regarding domestic violence.

But I'm not sure I understand the issue with the snippets from the forums at the very bottom of the home page. It looks like the kind of sampling you might find on any message board. Nothing identifiable, unless someone decided to use his or her real name, which is discouraged in clear terms. Nor do I get the Twitter concerns. I consider myself fairly Twitter savvy and all I can see on SR's twitter page is a brief synopsis of the articles along with a shortened URL leading to them.

Our content has always been viewable. That's what made me decide to join, under a name no one would ever associate with me and a vague description of my location.

Honest, I'm not being sarcastic. Am I missing something?

I've been feeling like a bit of a fool, or at least a babe in the woods, reading about the "burner email accounts" and references to all the details I should have read when I first signed up.

But you know, the first thing I was thinking about when I came here was NOT who would own the rights to anything I posted. Nor was I thinking about using an email account other than my usual one. Nor was it reading the "Policies, Rules and Posting Tips" section of the forum.

I'm not saying it is anyone else's job to have made me aware of these things. I'm just saying that the fact that I DIDN'T do all these things to cover my butt doesn't make me stupid or oblivious; it just means I was the wife of an A and I'd just learned the depth and breadth of the lies, stealing and drinking over the entire course of my marriage. And I was stunned and terrified and had not one brain cell to spare...

And I think that's pretty representative of how most folks come here.

I personally am not worried because I don't really have a reason... but seeing all these comments here about the Newsletter, they do make sense in specific contexts. I wonder, wouldn't it be possible to just PM the Newsletter to members using the SR system only? If the purpose is to send it to every member individually.

Over the years I have volunteered often with women's shelters and helped abused women (and children).

My concern is that if an abused woman posted here a month ago or two weeks ago and did not come back and then she receives this newsletter outing the fact that she has reached out for help..it would create a dangerous situation for her. I promise you that 99% of abused women have abusers who have access to their e-mail.

My concern isn't so much the newsletter as the fact that receiving it by e-mail isn't optional for members, at least not for the first issue. The endangerment to abused women is very real and one they are not even aware of at this time unless they return to the site and read this thread. Their anonymity is no longer protected when their e-mail can out them through something like this.

Thanks Emily. I did not know that "private" messages were not in fact private. Perhaps a name change to something like "Semi Private Messages" would be more accurate. I also think a disclosure statement about the ownership of "PM's"and disclosure of exactly who has access to "private" messages should be prominently displayed. This, for the benefit of the troubled souls who did not read all the fine print when they joined.

I also believe that some time ago one of the mods gave me a very different impression of the confidentiality of PM's.

Excellent idea haennie!
I too joined SR in a haze of denial and shock, my children were addicts.
The drama (read some of my threads, classic of a momma in denial) has caused my marriage to end. My divorce is July 2nd. Although we are on comfortable terms...that old blame game will rear its ugly face and "may" give my soon to be ex ammunition to be used in the final divorce hearing. Now, will he?
Education on the disease of addiction is in its infancy. It's getting out there but for me, at this time, he can really use this against me. Will he? Maybe yes maybe no.
Will the judge see it that I'm a fit momma? I'm not an addict but my adult daughters are, in recovery, but an addict none the less.
Now, I have a 16 yr old that is to be placed with me....so when my ex sees the Newsletter, what will he do?
Personally, I'd rather get the Newsletter as a PM. Then it's more personal and I would defiantly open it and enjoy and learn from it privately.
I still find it hard to say the words addict, heroin and daughters, in the same sentence.
Respectfully,
TT
