Though my profile says I joined in 2013, I actually joined in 2005. When I found all my posts had been Retweeted on Twitter without my permission I asked to have all my posts removed. Since then I no longer post any experience much less anything personal.

Now with our emails being used for "outreach" purposes, I feel the safety of some members using this site will be compromised. I know recovery is big business, but I think changing the wording of the guidelines when first joining should be revised. We should be advised that our emails will be used for outreach purposes and the following no longer applies: " We attempt to keep the forums free from advertisements, pay per click systems and other revenue generating systems.

Could you let me know where you found this verbiage? I agree an update is needed.

Thank you cynical one. Wow. Just Wow. I need to digest this. Our pain is being used as bait it seems. I had no idea about the tweets or other ways we've been used without our knowledge for profit and leaving the door open for violation privacy and possible damages to our persons or reputations.

Just wow.

I think it's fine to quote me in those threads, although again please direct them here for more info.

While we are pulling a list from the SR forum system to generate the initial list we are going to send the Monthly Newsletter to, the Newsletter list will run independent of the forum from here on out. So, as I mentioned, if you do not want to receive the monthly SR newsletter, please click Unsubscribe. It's the only way to be 100% sure you wont receive the Monthly Newsletter.

If you change your email preferences via the User Profile going forward, that's fine, but it wont affect the newsletter because they wont continue to re-pull the list every month before the send.

I hope that makes sense. Again, please unsubscribe from the newsletter if you do not wish to receive it.

Also, I just want to clarify that the primary goal of the Monthly Newsletter is to highlight interesting/educational info from Sober Recovery's content side, not to "spam" you with heavy advertising, etc., or else (understandably) no one would want to read it! Hopefully you'll like it, and while we're proud of it please let us know if you have input as to how we can make it better.

Thanks!!

I understand you may feel differently, but SR is not about using people as "bait." We encourage you to post freely, but part of any online interaction is that there is a public element to it, so reasonable caution must be taken not to share things you feel are too personal (for example, using your real name as your username isn't a good idea).

I hope that helps.

Emily, the sharing of personal experience is how recovery begins and how it continues the healing process. If we are not safe to do so, then the, I guess now, secondary purpose of this board ishamstrung. A huge shame. This board no longer serves what it was originally intended for. I am sorry if Internet Brands doesn't see it this way.

recovery isn't primarily about profits.

I am quite stunned at the moment. I went to Twitter just now and searched... wow. I am so upset right now about the fact there is a Tweet option from within this forum. This is completely unrelated to the newsletter, but Cynical One's post got me curious.

Who ever thought it was a good idea to put a Twitter plugin into this sort of forum????

Flabbergasted.

As am I, Jennie. Flabbergasted and shocked.

There must be a remedy for this. At the very least a clear warning about what seems like a predatory move on vunerble people.

I don't even understand what this means.

The forums have always been viewable from any device.

Unless the tweets identify the user in some way that I'm not understanding?

Ok, in all fairness, after I've calmed down a bit now... you can actually tweet anything you want with those share plugins on your browser, so anything can be tweeted at any time using a plugin that's not necessarily from within this forum.

Well, anything SoberJennie or biminiblue says is searchable by Google.

I'm trying to understand how or if your post means we/you have been identified in some way on twitter?

Do you not understand the nature of Twitter and what happens when something goes viral?

If not, I don't even want to get into that conversation.

I don't get the whole twitter thing, but I'm a bit blown away by the fact that this is still going to happen. Even when nobody here seems to want it to. I'm still missing the 'why' here? Is it because this IS a money making thing? It seems at this point completely unethical, but it's going to happen regardless. As though it's a necessary evil, when it's not. It's a newsletter. And an action someone is going to take, regarding it.

What am I missing? Why isn't there just a simple, "OK. We rethought this and we'll do the newsletter by request only"?

Point blank - why do you feel it necessary to continue with this plan regardless of the feelings, desires, AND REQUESTS of the people who it's being imposed upon?

I'm gettin more than a bit creeped out.

I think you may be where I was when I was having a meltdown about the forum "update" (ads, etc.). I just couldn't get it either.

What it amounts to, unless I am still misunderstanding, is that the site is OWNED by Internet Brands. The mods, admins, etc., have no control over things like the ads, the newsletter, etc. That is all controlled by the company that owns the site. The site is NOT something that is created and managed by a group of helpful souls; it is paid for and belongs to Internet Brands.

So as I understand it, you and I and everyone else can come here and air our feelings until the cows come home and nothing will change. SR is owned by a business, which will do what it thinks will make it money. You and I don't pay for the forum, so what we want doesn't particularly matter.

Maybe SR should stand for Selling Recovery.

Well, that's pretty much what I thought. And I realize that the forum members have little to do with it. I don't however know who Emily is, and I still can't seem to wrap my brain around why it's still going to happen. Some human being, somewhere, has to click "go". If they're going to do that regardless of what people want, then I'm certainly not going to continue supporting their cause.

People get into it with me regarding other issues I've brought up here, where money is clearly the motivating force. People talk about conspiracy theories... no conspiracy theories behind lots of really ugly things that happen. Just people out to make money. And they just don't care about anything other than that. Period. There's money to be made. Nothing shall interfere or stop the machine from moving forward.

Now I'll put my wow. Just wow.

This is pretty depressing.

fwiw - I urge people to take window shots of all these posts should this thread one day disappear. I have, but I may soon be very out of the loop.
