Craigslist Again : /

Since I know we were just talking about this.......

I will out myself, I may as well give out a
warning so no one else does it.

If you are looking for a roommate, be careful who
you talk to and how much info. you give out.

There is a group and their new game is they are
out of state or out of the country.

They will play the email game with you for a few days,
tell you their story, send you pictures of themselves,
tell you all about how they served in the Red Cross,
all about their sick uncle, how they like to do dishes,
blah blah blah, in the meantime, they get you to tell
them about you........ and even how you should
start considering them YOUR NEW SISTER!
*Slaps Head*

Then they decide to take your apt. and they are going to
send a money order. They don't want your bank account,
so I am still trying to figure out how they could scam me.

Well I found out.

They take all the information you give them, and they put
up ads under your name later, put up pictures you gave them,
and they "RENT OUT YOUR APARTMENT", they tell the person
Oh but I am out of the state or country so send me a money
order or western union, if someone falls for the scam, they
send money and show up at your apartment expecting to move in.

It works and it is happening.

The other thing they are doing is going to foreclosed houses,
they have figured out ways to get a key to the lock box,
they have you meet them their, draw up fake papers, you give
them cash, money order, whatever,
they have you sign the papers, they give you the keys,
and they dissapear, and then you find out it is a foreclosed house.

The first one, the one I fell for, I found out because it happened in
my building already!
The 2nd one was on the news tonight.

Just thought I'd pass on that warning. Not that any of you are as dumb
as me, lol. One of these days I WILL LEARN, really, lol

An excellent reason to not give your personal info
or pctures on line. Not a wise idea.....

Thanks Done for sharing....

I dunno, I racked my brain trying to think how they could
be scamming me, I kept thinking as long as I don't give them
my bank account, don't cash any cashiers checks,
don't let them in my house?

What could they be doing?

I could never think of this stuff, grrrr

I've had pretty good luck renting my property and selling stuff on craigslist, oddly enough, better luck there than with fairly expensive ads in the local newspaper. Only had one odd incident, someone offering to send a cashiers check or money order for something I was selling-a Zodiac dinghy-it was pretty obvious that the buyers' native tongue was not English, and this was an item that would best be bought locally, due to the shipping expense.

All this being said, I still get the odd 'Nigerian' money scam email every now and then. Caveat emptor applies to both parties these days.

I've been renting out the room in my apartment for years, but haven't had to do it for awhile, it used to not be so hard, I am actually taken aback at how much it has changed
in just a few years.

I liked it back when CL was more underground and not that many people knew about it.

I hate having to always think first, is this person a scammer?

But after my last roommates, ughh, I learned a lesson......

I need to get smarter... I am so dumb sometimes.

Dear Mr. Scammer..I am sorry - m4w

Dear Mr. Scammer
I owe you a few apologies:
• I am sorry for responding and saying sure I am happy to engage in a bizarre business deal with you knowing full well it isn’t real.
• I am sorry you wasted time to print a horrible fake check.
• I am sorry you spent $4.90 UPS’ing it to me overnight.
• I am sorry for taking a few days to get back to you after I got the check and ask you for your phone number which you can’t give me. I knew that and still I emailed you for the phone number.
• I am sorry that I lied to you and said I could not find a western union office near me, making you look them up, emailing me a list and me telling you those two liquor stores are shut down.
• I am sorry that I lied to you about getting pissed at the western union office because they wanted $1.75 to cut a check and that I said that’s robbery and left in a huff. The truth is I never went there in the first place. Sorry for wasting your time that day.
• I’m sorry I lied the next day after you threaten to call the FBI and local police on me because I cashed your check and would not pay you. I knew you would not, but I wrote you an email begging you not to call the police and that I would pay you tomorrow after I cashed the check.
• I’m sorry that I lied the next day and said the western union office girl was rude to me so I left in anger, again delaying your money by another day.
• Im sorry I lied about sending the money to western union in your name vs the shipper so you could not pick it up. I realize this cost you a day or so.
• I am really sorry that I lied and said that the money order was at your western union, but off by 1 zip code making you drive 30 minutes to find out I am a liar.
• Your last email to me was justified. Obviously from your language you were pissed. The fact that as you "YELLED” and your grasp of the English language seemed to fade away like my Mom’s when she is livid showed me what a bad person I am.
• Your phone call from Africa? was upsetting because as you were trying to explain to me how to go down to western union and pay the $1.75 and you would pick up the fee, I realized how frustrated you were getting. I also lied about being hard of hearing and asking you to yell. Sorry.
All in all, I am sorry for sucking up your bandwidth. I realize that my actions probably sucked up 6-10 hours of your time and kept you from fleecing some gullible person in America.
Please forgive me. Go ahead and send me another forged check and I will send you my cash to your shipper. Please try me again. Even though I lied you to about 15 times I won’t do it again.
Your friendly computer person.

That's what my Mom and friends say, lol, I always hear
"After everything you have been through in your life,
I am amazed at how trusting you still are." lol

I think it's probably my best and worst trait, lol.

lol, I love the best of.....

Thanks that one was great.

There is a forum I found at Xmas that is just for the Western union scam.
It almost had me in tears though, reading some of the people who had
fallen for these scams. Very sad. A lot of older people.....
