Withdrawal Seizures

"Who is the President of the United States!!??"

The man was yelling at me. I was laying on my back, strapped into a gurney and unable to move. His face wasn't angry, and he was wearing a uniform of some kind. We were moving, too, I could see tubes and wires swaying behind the man's head.

"WHO IS THE PRESIDENT!!?" He yelled again.

I couldn't think. Who was this guy? Where was I? And last but not least, why on earth did he need to know so much about who the President of the United States?

I focused. "Obama", I said.

"Good", he replied.

Okay, I thought. This guy is on my team. This is some kind of test to make sure I'm a citizen and so far we are off to a good start.

"How old are you?" he said.

"Really old", I replied. I heard someone laugh. It was my mother. She was there too. I could feel the vehicle make a left-hand turn. Okay, we were in a car. A van.

No, we were in an ambulance.

My conciousness started flooding back. I'd been opening Christmas presents, with my mom, sister, and brother-in-law. I had just received a book, "The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo". I'd taken a walk into the kitchen because I'd felt strange....and then everything went dark.

My family saw me have the seizure, right there on Christmas morning. I guess my face turned blue, and they even started doing CPR on me while they called 911. The paramedics had shown up, put me into a gurney, and revived me in the back of an ambulance.

And here I was. The next 24 hours were a blur, my muscles were sore, I had a black eye, I went through brain scans, answered questions, and sat in a hospital bed before limping back into my brother-in-law's car and being taken back to my mother's house. Later that night, I had another seizure while in the bathroom. This one was minor, though, and I awoke shortly with my pants around my ankles next to the toilet. I stayed with my family for two more days, and then flew home to Chicago.

The first thing I did when I got home was to pour myself a large, stiff, drink.

This scenario happened to me 3 times in total before I decided to quit drinking. Once I was in a hotel lobby in a foreign country. I nearly bit my tongue off when I had my final seizure, and I threw up all over the place right before I began convulsing, chocking on my own vomit.

Crazy, this disease, eh?

Withdrawl seizures are nothing to mess with. They can kill you. And unless you detox properly, they can be very severe. If anyone reads this, please make sure and be safe while detoxing. Go to a hospital - DO NOT try this at home. Don't taper, that's a fool's errand and the success rates simply speak for themselves. Please, if you are a heavy drinker and are trying to quit, do this in a safe, professional, medical environment!!!!

Good luck folks.

You are 100% correct about medical detox. Heavy drinkers are in danger doing the "cold turkey" dance. I know - since I'm one
