Self-pity

Self-pity

"I try to practice tolerance in small ways, putting aside the little resentments,
making light of that stealthy foe, self-pity, which will keep creeping in.
I know if I succeed, then I'm more likely to beat that great big resentment
which nothing has been able to pry from its roots deep in my soul."

Self-pity is usually caused by self-gone-wild.

Sometimes, I feel sorry for myself over reactions to my actions. Sometimes, I'm so blind to my actions that I don't have a clue what caused the reaction that causes me to self-pity.

But........my self-pity is usually short-lived. Compared to my life drunk, this life I lead is A-OK with me. It could be much worse.

I was never one to have any self pity. I really just never paid attention to others enough to even know or care if anyone liked me or not. I'm an introvert by nature so I don't need the approval of others for anything I do or say. In fact, I never waited on a reaction from others as a result of anything I did or said. I just do it, or say it and move on. If others don't like it, that's on them.

Besides, nobody likes a stick-in-the-mud. Self pity will win you ZERO amount of fans and friends.

My understanding is that self-pity occurs when one feels powerless to change their situation. Empowerment, support and encouragement are the antidote (for me).

This might just be the opposite of self-pity....character defects are character defects whether they are down or up....thank God we have a program of action to help us along our way....I appreciate what you said David H

God is still doing for me what I could not do for myself.

self pity i perceive as a cancer of mental health. it feeds on ones feelings of uncontrollable failure...
i use small accomplishments to fight this feeling off. projects i know i can remedy quickly and easily. i have many of these.none on its own significant, but when added up, they compound on themselves resulting in a aura of accomplishment. self pity and incompetence are held at bay. other projects help keep this negative world out of my head. it helps me to feel i am proving my worth to myself, my friends, my customers, my God.
