Threads getting shut....

Sometimes I feel like a child that just had her hands slapped!

How will we ever learn if something can not be worked
out to the finish.....Perhaps deleting an offensive post or person
that is contributing negatively in a thread is a better option.
Throwing the baby out with the bath water is just plain wrong!

Or is it me ...does anyone else feel this way?

I may be guilty of going off topic which is one reason threads are closed - apparantly we are supposed to start a new thread to talk about another topic...Can anyone tell me how to start a thread ????? I've been trying to figure that out...
OOOPS - just realized I haven't checked the main page or the Newcomers place...Thanks Janni

Patty-- I apparently missed the "negative" comments made in your thread as Mike already cleaned it I guess. I was surprised to come back and see the whole thing locked.

Deleting the negative comments from the thread is good, but I think what happens is that too many people tend to get carried away and do not listen to any initial warnings given to them by the forum leaders and they continue posting. I guess that's why they have to lock the whole thing down.

It sucks!!

Personally, I would prefer that the thread get locked and the "negative" posts NOT be deleted. It's confusing if you come in late and don't understand what happened or why it is locked.

The only post I made on my thread about Mel Gibson was the initial
one....had no idea some would take it to such extremes....Can you
imagine my surprise when I logged on this AM to find something I thougt
innocent enough was now locked down........and I really don't even know
how that happened....

My point exactly, Patty. If it gets out of hand, I have no problem with it being locked. It would be good to know what caused the lockdown, though.

I don't know if all of us are adults yet. As a not so recovered codie, I am stunted and do not always think with an adult mind. Some others I've seen here are more stunted than I at times, LMAO.

Yes, we are all adults.

Hey gang,

I don't slap people's hands. If I gave anybody that impression you have my apologies. Here's the way I work things, if you have ideas for a better way I am open to suggestions.

- This site is a for-profit business. The owners of this site have established rules for what they want in their site. Things like links to other business sites are not allowed, those people should _pay_ for adevertisment like everybody else. When somebody posts a link to another business I delete the post and send them a PM showing them where they can get an advertisement banner set up.

- This site operates under the laws of the state under which it is incorporated. In that state it is illegal to post pornography of any kind without appropriate licensure. The owners don't like it either. Porn posts get deleted without a PM

- There's a list of words that are considered offensive, and the computer automatically replaces those words with a ***** Sometimes the computer gets it all wrong, such as when sombody graduates from college Summa *** Laude. Nothing I can do about that.

- Sometimes people get in each other's face and start name-calling. I find that behavior childish. The problem is that this is a _public_ forum, and we get many visitors who never post. A number of these visitor are under age, and when these kids see name-calling I get PM's like "I'm not letting my little brother in here because you sound just like my parents when they're drunk". Given a choice between letting two adults act like fools and ignoring them vs. deleting some posts in order to show the children that people _do_ recover from this disease I will delete the posts. I also send a polite PM explaining why I deleted the post.

- Sometimes people get carried away and post a joke or a retort that is inappropriate for children. Those get deleted too and a PM is sent.

- Some people have a habit of escalating a discussion that is getting heated into a regular brawl. I am not a schoolyard monitor. If these people start getting into I just lock the thread and send them a PM.

- We get newbies in here about once a week that post their very first post at the end of some long, boring thread. They can easily get lost there. There's also newbies who ask questions about how to do PM's, and how to do quotes and such in the middle of some long boring thread. There's also newbies who read the insulting posts before I get a chance to delete them. In order to find these newbies yours truly, and the other mods and greeters, have to read _every single post_ in this forum, _every single day_ to try and catch those "lost newbies" before they disappear.

- Mods and greeters take vacations, get sick, have their own crisis. That means the rest of us have to peruse other forums and pick up the slack.

With all of the above going on I do _not_ have the time to play "kiss and make up" with people who fire off insulting posts. The old-timers here are perfectly capable of acting like adults and PM'ing each other when appropriate. It is very clear when a thread is getting heated, and you guys are more than welcome to re-start a discussion when you notice some hot-heads have derailed an otherwise healthy thread.

If you were to re-start those threads you would make the life of the greeters and mods _far_ easier. Every time I close a thread, or trash a post I get a flury of PM's that take time to answer, and then answer the replies to my answers. The mods and greeters here are all volunteers, we have a life outside of SR. Hand-holding and baby-sitting old timers who have enough recovery to be able to recognize the importance of keeping this forum welcoming to newcomers and _children_ is degrading to those old-timers. They're adults, they know how to behave like adults and they don't need me to tell them how.

If you are disatisfied with how a mod or a greeter handles things you are welcome to offer to be of assistance. Help is always welcomed.

Mike

Some people in some places will take any opportunity to use any comment as their soapbox.....sickness at its finest.

I wasn't referring to you Mike (this time) about the hand slapping.
Nor do I expect any apology from you either.
I was just expressing my surprise to see a post that I
thought was on a compassionate level (to an alcoholic)
become so ugly. I too have a life outside of SR and am not
around 24/7 to view the status of a thread. Had I started the
thread along those lines I could see how the tables could turn.
When I am wrong I will admit it, if my opinion is different
than someone elses I will offer my apology if I have offended them
but I still am entitled to my own thoughts...which then go underground.
Sometimes I think that as adults we can work through the muck
and come out on the other side...that is my hope anyway.

It's kinda frustrating to read a thread with a post removed, while all of the responses to that post are still there.
